    Hey guys:

I just got offered a new 1794 MGM fully loaded for $66k all in, tax tag etc. It's available in 10 days. I don't really need the truck until the end of the year but they said they would do a 90 day delay on payments. I plan to just write a check for the vehicle so I don't need financing but I don't mind doing this and then just write the check for the full amount as my first payment. I think this is a reasonable price and it's available. Does this sound like a decent deal or am I over paying? it's a 4x2 not hybrid.

Should I jump on it or roll the dice that something similar will come available in November/December when I was going to buy?

How much is it priced out on toyota.com? My 1794 wcp TRD off-road 4x4 5.5 hybrid was only a little bit more than that.

The price seems about in line. considering it includes tax etc, but who wants a 2wd truck? I'm a far cry from an off road type person and still find an occasional need for 4wd. I'd think the resale would really take a hit on 2wd, but that's just my 2 cents. I'd pass.

Thanks for y'alls input. Good advice. I have time and cash on my side so it may be wise to wait for 4x4, even if i have to go to a Limited instead of Platimum or 1794. Plus it gives me more time to make room in my garage :)

    Depends on need and location.

Personally - I wouldn’t call it a “deal” - as mentioned 2wd just does not hold us as well resale wise. When your sinking 66k into a vehicle - resale is a factor for most.

However - it’s not as if every market has a surplus of 4wd - and when you do find one it’s likely to be closer to 76 than 66. If you need it - plan on using it extensively and keeping a decade - its not a horrible deal. Again - situation dependent.

How many 4wd never get used ? Yet every time someone list a 2wd - invariably half (or more) of the replies are “If only it was a 4wd”. Sometimes I want to say - “then it would be 15k more - so why not save 15k on something you’ll never use”. Then again - I sold my old truck partly because it was a 2wd - looking back - never should have sold that truck.

Good points. I live in NC so winter driving is not an issue. This is my retirement truck and I plan to keep the truck for 200k miles. not really worried about resale value at that point. 4x4 is a nice want, definitely not a need and $15k more is less than desirable.

Good point and I understand 100%. I live in NC so winter driving is not an issue. I also survived 10 years in the Finger Lakes with FWD only. We will pretty much always take the wife's Avalon on road trips anyway. 4x4 is a nice want, probably not a need, but it would be nice.

4WD is like tow hooks, you want to have it and never use it...and that tundra dont have either of them

Ok - so knowing location is NC - I’m going to change my opinion on the deal. Unless there is a big accessory add - the price is inflated.

    58,500 retail truck
    3% sales tax = roughly 1750
Dealer fee and title another grand

That’s just over 61,200 by my math.

Now your going to have SOME accessories - simply put SE Toyota isn’t going to let there not be on their vehicles. A grand in accessories is a given.

That’s still 3 grand over sticker on a 2wd. Honestly - they are popular trucks and sell fast - but 3 grand over sticker on a 2wd isn’t a good deal. Reality is they should be at worst giving you a straight sticker deal - and soon you might actually see a grand off “special price” on that truck.

Again - despite what some will tell you here it is possible to have a perfectly useable truck that is 2wd - but at the quoted price I’d pass. I wouldn’t worry that there will be no trucks available in a few months - if anything supply will increase over time. Demand peaks at day 1 and goes down as more are delivered - few are saying “I just saw a new Toyota and now I want one” - it’s been a known revision and has been anticipated for some time now.

    At 60k - I’d say it’s a great deal - at 66 a borderline lousy one - somewhere between is probably fair.

As far as needing 4wd for snow - NC does see snow - depending where you live it could be a bigger need if your in the Mountains for example. Still very possible to live without it here though in major cities and even in the country areas. I’ve been near Winston for 2 years now and never had a problem with my fwd vehicle even in winter.

Only 3%? I don't know how it works there, but here in Kansas, I had to pay sales tax, plus whatever percent my county slaps on as well. It was at or above 10% all said and done, which is absolute garbage. I need to move to NC if that's all the sales tax is lol.

Yes - NC is “only” 3%

I say “only” 3% as that 3% goes to highways - BUT the county gets their share too - every freaking year. Just like real estate - autos are personal property in NC and you pay between .5 and 2% of your cars value every year in NC. So on a new truck like this - it’s likely between $300-800 a year in additional tax - going down over time.

Most states it’s a 6-9% tax up front (and you get to offset trade of used towards tax on new) - some states have 0% sales tax too - Oregon comes to mind as a biggie. Of course you have to be a resident and some of the fees in Oregon are well above the norms - and then their damn DMV is SLOW. Ohio I can get my title in 3 days via mail - NC took 2 weeks - OR took 3 months - MN was world class slow though a few years back - but I think that was mainly system upgrades at the time.

Yep that's it on a new car. 3%. We do have to pay property tax on it every year but it's not too bad.

I'm in Mooresville near Charlotte. If it snows that bad we just stay home :). It has pretty much everything. Pano moon roof, PVM, 12 speaker premium audio, 14" screen, 20" wheels, wireless charging. Spray on bed liner. More just cant remember everything. I'm trying to get them to throw in running boards and Tonneau Cover, but not hopeful that will be successful.

The things you list are standard - so included in the base price for a 1794.

There are only 3 packages for a 1794 - 2 have running boards so you can toss those as being included in that price - 3rd is $295 for tow mirrors.

Bed liner is what $750 +/- cost about that aftermarket - so no big deal - again - other accessories are likely there (can’t remember if wireless charging is accessory still or standard) - but at that price assuming even 2k in accessories not a screaming good deal - actually slightly poor.

Dealers are still spouting the line of “scarcity” - the only thing truly scarce is a qualified buyer with cash right now. Many ARE low on inventory - but your only buying one and if there is little competition for a particular vehicle that doesn’t matter much - they have a seat to fill and someone who wants it - there is no need for “market adjustment” - Toyota already made those adjustments in their base price this year.

Average dealer is selling 20% less cars these days - but making 200% more profit - thanks to market adjustments and buyers jumping in thinking that this might be there last chance to get something without waiting months/years for an order. Again - your money - but I’d shop around - you might find you could save 4 grand off that price placing a deposit and waiting 4 months for a similar truck or find that you can get 4wd for the same price. It pays to shop around within the Carolinas and isn’t too bad of a drive to go outside of metro Charlotte (market down there is dominated by a few names and pricing was a tad high in my shopping experience - as they have a defacto cartel on new and late model used).

Looking at the quote closer you are correct they have added on $2199 in "options" which includes extra oil changes, paint protection film etc. seemingly profit adders, plus $1,650 delivery processing and handling, more profit adders. All in tax, tag, etc. $66,161. It's a sweet ride but then again in a few months it will hit the first year depreciation too. Maybe just wait for the 2023 but due to some tax implications I need to buy in this calendar year. Those tax implications will offset the depreciation.

I’m thinking about selling my 2019 1794 TRD Crewmax with 24,780 miles. I’m in Northern California though. Good luck with whatever you decide. I can’t see the market sustaining itself for much longer but then again, I never thought it would last this long.

    Just FYI as well…

90 Days to first payment will still cost you 90 days of interest. You will accumulate interest during that period of time, so you can count on 90 X Per Diem in carrying charges.

It's supposed to be no interest accumulation to the first payment, just a 90 day delay on when the first payment is due, but I will verify. No sense paying even $100 interest if I'm paying cash for the truck.

You are in NC so that is Southeast Toyota. I can confirm that you will 100% pay interest with a 90 days to first payment deferral. Interest begins the day you sign your loan and is calculated in a per diem basis. The SETF rate sheet specifically stated “interest accrues during deferral”.

I happen to be the Chief Compliance Officer and Director of Financial Services for an Auto Group. We have a Toyota Store in our group and are located in the Southeast Toyota region.

Awesome and thanks for the info. I appreciate it very much. I’m working with the dealership in Concord and can also work with North Charlotte. No real allegiance to either one. Any and all recommendations are appreciated

Hard pass on the 4X2, but I live where it snows pretty regularly starting in October through April.

Toyota should just stop screwing around making 4X2 trucks, and make them all 4X4's.

I would simply tell them drop the extras or no deal.

Bottom line is there are other 1794s available now or prior to end of year - and it’s cheaper to transport a truck from anywhere on the east coast than pay all those “add on” cost.

The 1650 is clearly filler - that goes immediately

Paint protection film - cost under $100 in materials and labor to apply - it does help some vehicles - it overall not cost effective (just put a ceramic coat on it yourself if not installed already) - ditto oil changes (why prepay - even if you don’t DIY them - I much prefer flexibility on where I can take my vehicle vs being locked in to a pre paid plan). Good luck
