Seems to be a random issue, no rhyme or reason why it occurs at 500 miles for some. TFL worked theirs towing heavy all over the western US with no issues. The Canadian Truck King guys took TWO '22's from Vancouver to the Arctic Ocean and back with no issues..

I think people are making a bigger deal of it than it is. Yes, it's a problem. It doesn't seem to be something normally expected of Toyota quality and that's why it's being splashed all over the internet. My suspicion is that it's well under 5% of produced Tundras that have the issue.

I have to agree, based of forum polls and other inquiries, only few owners have the issue. Around 30k tundra's are already sold.

New to the tundra group, just came over from have a tacoma for the past 10 years.

    1.) 4/22 build date
    2.) 5/18 in for service
    3.) 5/14 failure - 510 miles
4.) Parking Support Brake Malfunction - Advanced Ultrasonic Detecting on Range System (in app)

My issue started with a warning saying Parking Support Brake Malfunction. I never received a reduced power warning. Took it in on 5/18 for service, they were backed up and had to keep it overnight for diagnostics.

'Performed health check on vehicle, no codes found for parking brake system. Did have code P25B473 Turbocharger/Supercharger wastegate " actuator stuck closed. Started repair procedure, cleared code, turned vehicle off for 30 seconds, turned vehicle on and got coolant up to operating temperature, 170 degrees F, off again and set up snapshot function. Turned vehicle back on and started recording data. Checked data for measurements. Wastegate valve sensor voltage when fully open (bank 1 and 2) measured 1.31V and when fully closed measured 3.80V. When measuring voltage from wastegate fully opened to fully closed contact, voltage was 3.9V/sec. Performed all readiness test for code P25B473. System judgement came back as normal and no codes are present. Took vehicle on test drive and vehicle performed as designed.

They told me it is all recorded now, so if the errors come back up, they have a history and will do whatever is needed to fix the issue.

All in all, I am not too concerned and have confidence that my dealer will take care of me. Sucks that we are having issues but I somewhat expected it with a first year.

Excellent chronology - post. Sorry your having to deal with this.
Your questions... "is this actually a turbo/wastegate issue, or is it a calibration/technology issue with all the new technologies in the Tundra?" GREAT QUESTION. I've been posing this question of 'part issue or technology issue?' on YouTube Tundra truck forums. I don't know the answer either but with the absence of information from Toyota it may be a turbo actuator (part) problem or a technology (firmware) problem or both?
I'm a Toyota loyalist in that I have bought 8 different Toyota automobiles/trucks over the (40) years and the way Toyota has managed this issue has been quite disappointing. All that aside, still have confidence on the brand and waiting on delivery of my 22 Tundra ordered.

I agree that your dealer sounds like they will take care of you. Some great service notes they provided you on that first visit.

Has anyone done or seen like a state by state map of these issues? Would be interesting to see if they are spread out throughout or regionally focused.

I actually believe Toyota is being truthful with the 1% thing.

They've sold thousands of Tundras already. If more than 1% were having wastegate issues, I think we would know it.

It seems like a bigger issue because, well, not as many people are taking to Facebook to say how much they love their truck...but you can bet your bottom dollar they'll be on every Tundra group and forum they can find to say that they're having a wastegate issue.

That's just how the internet works. What's the saying? A loud or vocal minority?

If mine ends up having the issue of course I'll be annoyed/aggravated. It's an expensive truck, and at this point, I would hope the issues are worked out. But I bought the truck 100% fully knowing that it is an issue I may possibly deal with. From here if it happens, it was on me that I rolled the dice.

I am only sharing my experience so others can do exactly what we all do, research and try to figure out what might be wrong with their truck. When I ran into my issue, it took 4 days just to get an appointment and into the shop. They couldn't even tell me if it was safe to drive, or if it would cause more damage. It was helpful to come on here and see what others experienced.

I LOVE my Tundra. It is by far my favorite vehicle I've ever had and I don't feel like I am trash talking it to make seem like a bigger issue. BUT, I do think this is a major issue. When you buy a vehicle, you expect to be able to drive it safely. Breaking down and potentially being stranded, with children, is simply not acceptable from any new vehicle. This should be brought to the attention of the manufacturer and if a forum helps do that, then great.

I wanted a faster vehicle so I also bought a Chevy SS... because 4 door sedans with big V8’s are hilarious.
Reports of issues seem to have slowed down here. Maybe a good sign? Cautiously optimistic.

For those who have to wait days for an appointment, I would just keep driving the truck. In fact I would gleefully drive it hard, hoping to blow it up. Like high pressure testing a rifle barrel, if it survives it’s probably good enough I go…. if it fails I sure don’t want it anyway.

Typically, I totally agree with you, but I need my truck and who knows when I could ever get a replacement if it blew up. If it was 2019, I’d hammer it down.

    Understand.

I have multiple vehicles at my disposal, so I have the relative “luxury” of being able to wait to buy, repair, or replace one.

Not everyone is in the same boat.

If it makes you feel any better the default programing in the Tundra seems to be self protective. If the waste gate sticks the ECU cuts throttle to make boost nearly impossible. Of course that renders the truck in limp mode.

Does anyone know what the process is when Toyota builds their vehicles and then test drives them?
How many months/miles would they have put on the new tundra before they start shipping them out?
We all see the early pics of the tundra all wrapped up so we cant identify it during their test runs, I
just wonder how long they performed their tests before they were offered for sale or order.

I would think they found and knew about this issue before they were offered for sale.
Maybe that's not how it works, IDK...

Seeing as how so few of the 2022’s have been affected by this issue what were the chances that their test vehicle(s) would have had the problem?

Add me to this list! Assumed it was the trans but I see here it maybe otherwise.

1550 miles. Truck cut off on me, while on the Interstate.

Why don't you find out for sure it's the waste gate/turbo issue before posting it here? Maybe it IS your transmission.

That’s a sound bit of advice just to keep this discussion organized.

I may ask a moderator to come in and remove some extraneous posts, including my own just to keep information tidy here.

Having a comment on a transmission failure in a thread about turbo failures is kinda ridiculous.

I know this isn’t all about the turbo, and I’m in a first gen. However, I have talked with 10+ 2022 owners in front of their trucks and none of them have had any lights or failures. 5-15k miles on them all.

Mine is in the shop now getting the turbo replaced as we speak. I’ll update with all the particulars later. My question: once the dealer has the parts and they’ve started the job, how long has it taken everyone to get their vehicle back?

Have there been any may or June build failures? I think the last one I saw was April

If not , they may have fixed it for the new builds

Got my truck back the same day they received the parts. It took a couple days to get all the necessary parts. Truck was there for 5 days including the weekend. They were all over it at my dealer. Painless experience.
