Purchased a used Trail model 4x4 crew cab in April with 24k on the odometer.
Sometime in May, I began to hear an item rolling inside the dashboard on fast turns and inclined turns. I wont hear it some days, but some days it drives me crazy. Dealership was no help at all. It sounds like a screw or marble and it hits something at either end of its route in the dash.
I have purchased a cable scope and have tried the following:
-scoped the defrost vent as well as I could
    -scoped the dash vents
    -removed the cabin air filter
-loosened the overhead console and look for a screw rolling around
-removed all dash speakers and scoped from there as far as possible

When the items settles to the drivers side, I hear a metallic noise. When it settles to passenger side, I do not.

    Next steps:
-open cowl cover and scope it

Any suggestions? I am ADD, so this is driving me crazy.

    Thanks

It's pretty easy to pull the stereo, climate control, USB/etc panels and that'll give you much more visibility inside the dash area... Maybe that'll lead to the problem?

Do you think there is any chance that instead of being inside the dash that it could be outside under the cowling that covers the windshield wiper linkage and wiper motors? It would be an acorn, rock or something in there if so. Something in there could sound like it is inside the dash when it is really outside.

I’d start here if this was me. There’s only a few spots behind the dash where something that could roll would actually roll side to side and not eventually lodge somewhere or pop out of its channel and fall down….that is unless the cross bar support in the dash had some metal inside the tube.

I’d also check under the carpet, in the floor board and under the center console. Both pretty easy to get to and easy spots for coins, BBs, earrings and such to get into over time.

I was just swapping some shifter trim the other day and found a kids toy ring and a couple coins under my center console.

That's true. One time I had a fender liner flapping while driving and it sounded like it was coming from under the dash.

Anyone have any pics of what the inside of the dash looks like. Wondering if there is some type of channel the “item” can be rolling in and can’t jump out of. I guess my next step is going to a stereo shop to see if they can open things up and see if they can locate it.
