2020 Tundra SR5 - Need help with minor audio upgrade

    Hey everyone. I'm satisfied with keeping the factory head unit, but I'd like to upgrade the speakers for a better sound with more clarity AND, I'd like to add just a little bass with potentially the ability to control the level of "thump" since different audio sources change the sound quality. So here's my basic questions:

    1. What size are the front and rear door speakers? Do I need to add tweeters or will a good door speaker give me what I want?

    2. What kind / brand of speaker do you recommend for the doors? (NOTE: I had Pioneer 6-1/2 three ways in my GMC, and I think I had too much in "highs")

    3. If I add a subwoofer and amp, what's the best way to do this? I don't need a competition system, just want to add a little better sound than what came in the truck.

    For 1 and 2, I say just go to Crutchfield. You can plug in your vehicle and it will tell you what fits. I suggest just replacing the front speakers whatever they are both the mid and tweeter, if applicable. I do not think replacing the rear is worth it. In fact, I suggest turning down the rear speaker volume considerably for a better soundstage.

    For 3: There are many ways to go about this. You can get a powered sub which might be enough and it is relatively easy to install. I did that in my 02 and decided soon enough that it just wasnt enough. Better audio will nearly always come from a dedicated amp and sub. At that point you might just get a multichannel amp to run the speakers and sub. (You can take this as far as you want. For example: a digital sound processor can greatly improve sound but requires serious investment of time to learn how to use.) You will need to wire up the sub to your battery, the frame (ground), and have the head unit feed it an audio signal as well as a remote turn on (you can sometimes get around the remote turn on, but why?)

    Start with a budget, go to Crutchfield. Will you install? If not, that is another cost to add in. You might try to find locals that have your vehicle and listen to their system as well.

    BTW: your truck is bad ass.

    I have a 2007. Not sure of the 2020 audio system. For me a new headunit was my first change. That and I removed the 6x9 door speakers, and installed 6 1/2 mid bass in doors, and tweeters in sail panels. I m doing major surgury in back for my subs, and amps, but if you just want minor upgrade I would get a good brand amplified headunit. Mine is a Kenwood Excelon, and 40 watts I think. If you want sub they make sub boxes that accomodate a double cab, or the other one, (I forget what its called. Full cab, club cab?). The double cab box would replace the toolbox under the back seat, and the other type cab would have a box that sits behind back seats I think. Think you would need shallow subs in either case because of the lack of room for full sized subs. It s funny. I was saying the same thing; minor upgrade, when I first started. Now it s out of control.:annoyed:

    The front door speakers are 6"x9" from the factory and the rear are 5" round. Many speaker combo's will come with adapters if you want to run components.
    I chose the Kenwood Excelon KFC-XP184C for both the front and rear doors. I cut the holes and mounted the tweeters in the sails. Rear doors got the tweeters in the factory mount.
    I also chose the Excelon DDX6906S HU. I did replace the corner dash speakers with Excelon KFC-X2C mid range and the center dash speaker is a Excelon KFC-X3C. @james@tech12volts is building a 10" ported box with a Hertz sub and sending the Excelon X802-5 5 channel amp and all harnesses to make it a plug and play. I wanted to keep as much as possible with one manufacturer for ease of continuity.
    You will hear guys say to just unplug the dash speakers. Keep this in mind if you plan on keeping the factory wiring....
    The corner dash and door speakers are run in series which means that if you unplug the corner dash speakers, the door speakers will get no sound. The plug has to be plugged into the harness. The solution is to cut the + & - at the speaker and plug it back into the truck harness. One more thing... The center dash speaker is a dual voice coil. A single will work but you will either pick up the left or right channel but not both.
