I just went over 1000 miles on my 2020 Tundra. I have 2 years of free oil changes. What's the recommended interval for synthetic oil? Does it have break in oil when new? 1000 miles, 5000 miles or 10,000 miles for the first change? Does anyone go 10,000 miles between changes?

I did my first at about 800 miles to replace the factory oil and was surprised how dirty it actually was. I plan on 5000 mile intervals on my truck. Expect lots of different opinions when it comes to this, but this is my plan. Good luck with your new truck.

Welcome to the forum. I highly recommend getting a beverage of your choice and doing some searching on this topic. There is plenty to read. Bottom line: No break in oil, everyone does it differently, 10,000 miles for normal usage works just fine.

10,000 miles for non flex fuel engines.

5,000 miles if you have the flex fuel engine.

Toyota does not have a special period or timing for break in. Whatever the normal interval is, that is what they recommend.

My dealer said first change at 3000km and 8000km after that. After the warranty is up I'll prob change it every 12000 km.

Toyota tells you first change at 10,000. Second at 20,000 and their done with you. I'm looking at your pic and can see you can do maintenance s*&t around the house. Modern engines do need not the break in of the olden days but that first change of the rear differential 25,000 miles early the magnet will tell you break in is occurring. I changed my 2019 at 1,000 and again at 5-6000 cause crazy or not its $30 spent on the best piece of mind you can never get back. Change the oil now cause break in does occur. Also plan on doing the rear diff at around 7-10,000 cause it really needs it. Anyone who says 10,000 for the first oil change is OK then one question, "why does EVERY Blackstone Labs reports from any auto forum that is from a newer, less then 20,000 mile car ALWAYS has them state the higher iron/aluminum and such contaminants are normal for break in".

I went 10k before getting my first free oil change. I kinda wish I hadn’t, but I was in the process of moving and didn’t have time or could do it myself. I did a lot of driving back and forth to the new place. I do it every 5k now or 6 mo. I don’t have any issues and will probably trade the truck in well before any issue would come up.

I believe some people have had their oil tested by Blackstone and they said those people could go as high as 13k between oil changes. Take that for what its worth

I don't think toyota OEM oil is synthetic. If you abuse it or use Flex fuel probably do it at 5000 mile interval. If its just a commuter non heavy towing truck 10k. Mine is a work truck lots of freezing cold start drive 2 miles do it again ( lets fuel past the rings into oil) , plus towing and offroad . So 5k miles and synthetic for mine.

I always change it before 1k when new. You can really see the fine metal in that initial change (try shining a light at the oil). After that, it's 5k intervals. The oil capacity is so high I get why they specify 10k as OK but I'm old school and it makes me feel better.

10,000 miles. Even for flex engine (which I have). The so called 5,000 for flex engines is nothing more than warranty risk management for Mama Toyota. Well. Unless you actually run E85. Do you run E85 consistently. Then 5000 might not be often enough.

I changed mine at 5,000 miles just for piece of mind. I’m an engineer and I believe the 10,000 mile interval Toyota specifies is adequate but I just wanted to do it - $20 for the oil and $6 filter. I’m a Tim Taylor kind of engineer and over design things.

I read my 2018 manual to my salesman. It states for 4x4 and towing applications, every 5000 miles. I negotiated the 5k miles up to 30 mile mark. Do them on my own now at 5k

Sorry my math was a bit off - when I change oil I get three 5 qt jugs from Wally World for $22 a jug. 8.5 qts go into the Tundra and 6.5 qts go into the Sienna - would would’ve thought Toyota was smart enough to design engines so the oil math would work out so nice? :notsure:

I did a change at 1k for a break in and honestly after seeing all of the horror stories here about dealerships I’m not sure I will even use the free oil changes from the dealer

My dealer told me Toyota oil is basically Mobil 1 synthetic.

It's Mobil One Synthetic with Toyota's tweaks of some kind.

I do mine every 5k. Usually I run Mobil 1, but lately I’ve been using Rotella Gas Truck because I bought a bunch on close out.

I’m planning on staying with RGT...it seems quieter than my Mobil 1 and the RGT’s used oil analysis I did was really good.

I’ve read a lot of theories on the merits of 0W-20 oil and that Toyota specifies it for certain reasons and that changing viscosity can quiet an engine down...

I've bought 3 new-from-the-dealer Toyotas since 2017. Never once used a "free" oil change. I guess they finally figured me out as they're not blowing up my phone trying to bait me into the dealership for a "free" oil change for my 2019 Highlander. :D

My dealership says every 5,000 miles for me free! Why not they use only Toyota fluid I saw them using in bay! Free is free! Just don’t let them sell you anything! We shall see! I guess only 500 miles!
