Good morning, fairly new here, have a 2020 Tundra Double cab looking at a 5th wheel. Having a difficult time sorting through the specifications and recommendations. A good friend has a 2007 Starcraft Homestead 240RGS, 26' 8", unloaded weight 6041, gross vehicle weight 8200, hitch weight 957. From what I can figure, this would be too heavy for my Tundra. The truck is stock no changes from the dealer. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum! Lots of threads here regarding towing and payload capacity. Whatever you do, try to do it safely. Also be aware of changes in the truck and trailer angles with a fifth wheel, its really EZ to smash the bedside and trailer in certain instances like while turning and ascending hills and such.

If you're trying to keep inside the payload numbers, that's super difficult. My DC is 4WD, 5.7L, small gas tank, very few options, not even side steps. After adding the hitch and rail weight, and with no passengers, the max loaded trailer with a 25% pin weight would be 4050 lbs. A RCLB 2WD would be better, their payload is up close to 1900 I think, which subtracting 200 for the hitch hardware and 200 for a driver would allow a 6000 lb loaded fifth wheel trailer @25%. This might be getting close to the 4100 lb RAWR though.

It's good to assume the higher percentage if you look where all the storage compartments and water tanks on a fifth wheel trailer are. They're much more often in front of the axles.

It's annoying knowing my 4 cylinder Tacoma had a higher payload rating than my Tundra

100% serious - Go buy a 3/4 truck. Don't risk your family or another family on the road. All it takes is one absent minded driver to set off a deadly chain of events.

My preference is a Dodge 2500 hemi.

^^^This. If you really need to tow a 5th wheel, you should upgrade to a 3/4 ton or 1 ton. Fortunately, now is a great time to sell your Tundra and might actually come out ahead financially.
Like many others who realized the Tundra is seriously limited in payload, upgrading to an HD is the best option - or find a smaller RV that fits within the specs of the Tundra. It’s almost guaranteed the “real world” hitch weight will be much higher than what is posted.

    Not certain, but I don't think I've ever seen a 1/2 ton with a 5th wheel.
