I was quite surprised to find my new to me 2020 CM running after picking up my daughter this afternoon. Got out (truck off, key out), locked with fob. Came back, hit unlock on fob and as we got closer to truck, I was amazed to see truck was running. Got in and truck turned off. Put key in and started truck back up. What am I missing? Googled in and searched here and didn't find much. Very confused.

When you hit the remote 2 times then hold down the 3rd it will start truck. Had it happen to my buddy stuffed keys in pocket and while working in the shop it must have depressed the lock button enough that it started truck up. Some people have a habit of hitting the remote a few times so it beeps while looking for truck in parking lot, that will also do it.

I have an aftermarket alarm/remote start..
It starts by holding the button down for 5 seconds.
More than once, more like 10 times, the truck has started with the keys in my pocket...:eek2::cool:

The lock button hit 2 times then held down for a few seconds the third time and it starts the truck up. When you got close and hit the unlock it will kill the engine.

Here's the sequence lock the doors first, Then a quick click click on lock button and third time hold lock button for 3 seconds should start right up.

    https://www.kbb.com/car-news/toyotas-key-fob-remote-start-will-now-require-a-subscription-fee/

This is old news, but worth reading up on, as it may relate to why you can’t start it.

FWIW, the range and how long it takes to start on the factory fob is a total joke. That and you don’t get feedback on whether it actually started if you can’t see or hear.

The app or aftermarket starters are superior as they provide that feedback and work at much longer distances.

Actually if it does start the 4 way flashers will flash for about 20 seconds to let you know that the truck is running.

I’m saying I can start my truck from the 15th floor of a building, can’t see it and know it started as the remote tells me. The point is, you don’t need line of sight on the vehicle.

Our Sequoia has the factory remote start and it is almost worthless. By the time I get in range to actually remote start it, it will have run for maybe 30 seconds and then when I open to door, it shuts off. It is basically only useful if I need to start the car in the driveway, but we garage it, so we virtually never use it.

Ahh get it, yeah from 15 floors away it would be a bit hard to see it run. OEM starter good for about 100 feet max.

Correct, I believe I mentioned that. Lock, click click hold. Glad you got it sorted. My 2012 Is a real pain also. Very time sensitive.

Correct there is a certain amount of time around 30 seconds, before the immobiliser sets after you lock the doors. Once that sets then you can initiate the remote start sequence. It's very fussy at least mine is.

I haven't had to leave mine locked for a period of time. I just hit the lock button first and then start the 3 lock sequence and it starts up. Most vehicles seem to need you to hit the lock button before remote start. Even if they have a designated remote start button and already locked.

The Key fob on the tundra is just really finnicky and it takes some getting used to.

Because of the truck shutting off as soon as it's unlocked, i rarely use the remote start. Unless there's ice or snow on the windshield.

I will keep playing with it. Glad I did get it to work (operator error for sure). mine actually turns off when I get in...not right at unlocking. I saw some videos and they sort of tout it as a "warm up" for the vehicle on cold days.

Curious, if one does have this option, and they accidentally start the vehicle without knowing it, how long will it stay running?

The vehicle runs for up to 10 minutes for each Remote Start session before it automatically shuts off. You can Remote Start a maximum of two times.
Note: The vehicle runs for a max for 20 min run time (Remote Start x2) before either opening door or manually starting the vehicle.

Any Toyota vehicle that has been activated by remote start will idle for 10 minutes before automatically shutting down. However, if the driver needs more time, they can press the lock button again during the first 10 minutes to receive an extra 10 minutes of idle time.
