2019 piston seized, hole in block, advice needed

First off, this is all hearsay from my daughter, her pal that was driving it and a Toyota dealer service advisor. I haven't seen it, seen no pics. 2019 Sequoia with less than 100k miles, engine started knocking by Fairplay, CO came to an abrupt stop, puddle of oil under the engine. Daughter said it was running fine two days before.

* Yota dealer says hole in block, that's believable.
* Yota dealer recommends a used longblock engine, estimate apx $15k.
* Yota dealer says a new shortblock with the original topend parts, estimate apx $20k.

I don't know what to recommend to her. Any advice, I'm all ears.

 

Seems pricey either way. Used long block should be $7-$8K methinks.

 

This. The dealer will rake you over the coals and more than likely you won’t be getting a better product.

 

100% have another shop install a low mileage used motor. That dealer price is obnoxious.

 

Used engines are around 7,500 dollars if they are able to source one. Most likely 17-20 hours book time at 180ish an hour. Stupid thing about book hours is that the rate goes up the longer the job. If they source the engine from a reputable supplier, and pay for the warranty (covers them), that typically requires them to put some new parts on, water pump, spark plugs blah blah blah. 15k may be a tad high but not far off a dealer price.

 

Look here for a used engine in your area and find a good independent Toyota mechanic.. www.car-parts.com
