I bought my 2019 Tundra 1794 with the expectation (dealer told me so...) that it would be able to have the 2020 Android Auto/Apple CarPlay software flashed into the head unit.

Has anyone heard of this, or done it? I can't stand Entune, and I really want Android Auto.

Considering trading it in for keyless start and the better media center, they are both a big deal for me for some reason.

    Thanks!

There are a lot of Android Auto HU’s on the market. Check out the Sony XAV-AX5000 as a starting point. I have not heard of any keyless start mods but maybe there is something out there.

Replacing the headunit isn't as easy or clean as giving Toyota a couple hundred bucks to make the whole thing work as-is.

The 2020 is not compatible with 2019 and below head units. The CarPlay/Android software is only compatible with Entune 3.0, which the 2019 DOES NOT have. Your dealership is full of crap and are wrong. Just buy an aftermarket if that is your goal

So, can't you put Entune 3.0 on the 2019 hardware?

@KeetAz is correct, your salesman/dealership is full of sh!t.

There was a thread recently on a 2020 guy wanting to replace the stock HU with an aftermarket HU.
Problem he ran into was the 2014 and ^ Maestro wiring harness (that retains the steering wheel controls) will not fit the 2020 HU wiring harness.
They completely changed the wiring harness plugs in 2020..

    Here is that thread..
The plugs of his 2020 Entune look NOTHING like the plugs of the Entunes of the past.
    They have different sized connectors.

The best (and least expensive) way in your situation is to go with an aftermarket HU. A lot of threads on here will give you insight. I installed a Kenwood DMX906S in my 2019 and love. Fit is pretty good with the trim surround you can get and I love Wireless Apple Car Play!

When I bought my 2016 - I took the chrome handles off my 2011 to swap out.
The salesman was 100% positive they wouldn't fit due to redesign, told him he was mistaken.

Should have seen his face when they fit and functioned as they should.

It seems whenever I buy vehicles I get the young this-is-my-first-job salesperson. I end up teaching them more about the vehicles than the other way around.

Aftermarket will be better anyway. The head units are the weak links in the sound system on these trucks

Except for the lack of an actual physical Volume Control knob which in a truck is a need for me more than a want!
I do not need AA,Carplay or the biggest screen in the land,I do need to ability to take my old ass hand and adjust the volume easily.

    Bah Humbug.

In the end I really just don't like the Entune-less-than-3.0, wood trim, and lack of key-less start. I guess I'll get an aftermarket HU, some vinyl wrap for the dash, a TRD steering wheel (?) and live with the 1985 keyed start. I'm at the dealer for my 5000mi and I don't think those things are worth the $12,000 hit I'd take for upgrading to a 2020.

Moving to the TRD Pro would be fun though.

    :)

    Thanks for the input guys.

No, those trinkets are NOT worth the extra $12k. I know that I am probably in the minority here, but I do NOT care for push button start. Mrs. Preacher has it on her Infiniti and it is annoying IMO. As far as the 2020 head unit vs. older models, they ALL sound like shit. Just upgrade to an aftermarket (I went Kenwood) and you will loads happier!

For the most part yes if you order through Crutchfield and buy their ready harness (which is $25) it’s plug and play. You have to run a Separate GPS antenna that comes with the HU (I put mine under the center speaker grille in the dash).

Edit: and you have to run a new microphone that comes with it, you can’t reuse the factory mic).

Having a 2020 and also having access to a 2019, the Entune stuff doesn't seem really any better, the big difference is Carplay or AndroidAuto. Those two basically replace the whole Entune interface while connected.

In all my years I've learned at least one thing, never believe a salesman at the dealerships..

As for the stereo, keep the HU and go with tech12volt for 800 bucks. It's a great system for the money.

Yeah, I just did a significant upgrade on the audio, but kept the stock HU.

I now have a TT 12” sub, a 5 channel amp and the full set of Hertz door speakers and tweeters from James. It sounds great, but I really would like to have apple CarPlay. My wife’s new Tahoe has it and I am sold.

Hey you wouldn't happen to have the Anytime camera kit hooked up to your aftermarket head unit would you?
