    New here, Hola!

Bought a 2018 Crewmax limited w/ TRD option a couple months ago with 34k miles on it. Was "Certified Used" from the dealer with I think like 60k mile basic and 100k mile powertrain. Drove 4 hrs to get it in Iowa. Looked at the frame and usual problem body spots and didnt see anything issues before we bought it...

Got home and a couple weeks later got my crawler out and rolled under the truck just wanting to get familiar w it. To my surprise i found that the rockerpanel/ cab corner at the back bottom of the rear door had large rust spot were the paint protection film was supposed to be.... ON BOTH SIDES!!!

Now I understand things are prone to chipping and breaking but this truck has no chips anywhere other than these two spots. The area its in shouldnt be prone to chipping in the first place because its practically hidden by the corner of the doors which also has no chips on it. Further more that protection film should be protecting it from chips.

My two cents: Thats way too much of a coincidence to have rust spots in the exact same place on both sides of the truck where the film should be protect20200129_130439.jpg 20200129_130534.jpg 20200129_130439.jpg 20200129_130534.jpg 20200129_130439.jpg 20200129_130534.jpging it, when the rest of the truck is chip free and only 36k miles on it.... To me it looks more like rust that started behind the protection film and got so bad that it burst open the film. Not a rock chip that happened in the same place on both sides and somehow missed the corner of the door.

Brought it to the dealer and voiced my concern that the protection film was defect and caused it or an underlying paint issue was at fault. Toyota's Corrosion Warranty is 60month/60k miles. Dealer seamed interested to hear me out until they found out that I hadn't bought it from them. Service manager said he would send the pictures to Toyota HQ but that he didn't think they would do anything about it.

-Check your trucks... Anyone else have issues in this same spot??

-Anyone know of a separate warranty coverage for that protection film?? (looking at other tundras it looks like its factory installed on all)

-Assuming Toyota wont fix it... How should I fix it? Linex color-match rocker panels?

Maybe someone else knows for sure, but isn't there a Toyota pre-campaign announcement, or maybe even an official recall, about paint peeling from the truck in the protective film areas?

That sucks. Did you contact the dealer that you purchased it from?

    Welcome from NY.

I can't tell exactly where that spot is but is it possible someone raised the vehicle from the wrong spots?

Dont know why it posted the same 2 photos 3 times.... Here are some additional photos. Before i went into the service dept I walked around the lot looking at used tundra in the same spot. It looks like it is just a really crappy design/ application of the protective film... If it isnt completely bonded to the paint then it creates a "pocket" for salt/debris which i can image speeds up the corrosion proccess.

The toyota dealer we bought it from is 4 hrs away and seamed very unwilling to work with us or even listen when we had brought up a few minor issues before- DanDeery Toyota. Figured since the issues is probably something Toyota HQ would have to decide on, i could probably go to any Toyota Dealer to have them send the claim.

-Highly unlikey... It would have destroyed the edges of the door before putting chips there. This spot is on the rocker panel almost hidden by the bottom back corner of the rear doors

It's obvious that the PPF was not trimmed properly in the corner of the opening and worked loose allowing water and debris to collect in that one spot. And if road salt is used on the roads there, that would promote rusting in that area. The PPF should have been trimmed along the curve instead of lapping over the corner.

Having said that the previous owner should have brought that to the dealers attention as soon as the rust started. Still it's not that bad and can be fixed by a good touch up technician.

    Enjoy your new ride!!!

Checked my 18, iowa also. The bottom edge had lifted like your and was trapping dust/dirt, fortunately no rust.

I took a razor and trimmed the lifted part so it wouldn't trap any more dust.

Assumed you had a rock chip and with the collected dirt/salt which help keep that area moist for rust to form so quickly.

Dont think I would have ever noticed that area if it wasn't pointed out.
