I have been reluctant to post due to the situation is still unresolved with Toyota Corp. Quick recap 2018 Tundra sport 1500 miles engine failure. Toyota has replaced the short block and I received my truck back. I do not want this truck and want some sort of compensation. An upgraded trim model. Does this seem reasonable?

    Honestly? No it's not reasonable.

They provide a warranty for that exact reason. Manufacturing problems happen and it was rectified.

A reasonable request I think would be an extended powertrain warranty.

Agreed, if its one time and they fixed it, no big deal. Getting an extended warranty added for free is a fair ask, I think.

This truck was completely disassembled cab lifted off the frame to replace just the short block and all the old parts cleaned and refitted. Metal shavings through out the motor due to main bearing failure. I could understand 10k miles. I still have temp plates and haven't made the first payment. This is a major component which no longer is original to the vehicle.

True it sucks but they are doing their part and covering under warranty. Now if it happens again. Give them hell. For now be happy and ask for extended warranty

But...Toyota fixed it under warranty. Ask for extended warranty as mentioned. If they dropped a 4.6 in then I could except "no longer is original". My 3 cents..

Ha looks like I'll be stuck with it. Went from a bad 2016 tacoma to a worse '18 Tundra. Actually the Tundra is good no complaints other then the engine. We'll see what happens.

It sucks. I'd be miffed too. But it did get fixed. Definitely get freebie extended warranty. It was a MAJOR failure afterall...

If you don’t want it, trade up to the next trim level. Probably the only way you will get out of the truck.

That is what I am hoping for. As for not being original, isn't the block s/n match to the VIN and the heads? This failure devalues my vehicle. It's not in carfax but is service history and if I was buying this used I wouldnt even consider it unless it was a great deal. This is my reasoning.

The sticker price on sport vs limited isn't that much of a difference. Probably the cost of extended warranty and scheduled maintenance. Hopefully Toyota does the right thing to keep a returning customer.

3 tacoma, Highlander, and now a Tundra.

Why would a new engine with a different number lower the value of your truck, we not talking muscle cars from the 60s or 70s here. It was fixed under warranty and that is all Toyota has to do. Now, if it were to happen again or you have another catastrophic failure you probably will have a case under the lemon law. If you contact your Toyota they may agree to give you an extended warranty for free......they don't have to though.

    Just being realistic here.

That same reason a minor reportable car accident does. You can now make a diminished value claim even though it is made whole and expertly repaired. The value is less as is with this truck now. If i planned on keeping it a lifetime that would be a different story.

I work also in a maintenance field and many if not all of my coworkers agree with my opinion . Didnt realize to how different the opinions are. Thanks for the feedback.

#8 bearing and rear main bearing major scoring as well as crankshaft journal and metal debris in oil pan and filter. I brought it in after it developed a knock or tapping which changed with rpm.

Request the Platinum warranty. They will cover you for 100,000 miles bumper to bumper. If its your 3rd engine replacement you can Lemon Law it. If its the 15th repair that has taken a week to repair and the vehicle has been out of service for an unreasonable amount of time you can win that also. If its the only thing you have had go wrong and they fixed it right the first time, you are SOL. Enjoy the truck and ask for the extended warranty.

It was out for 20 days. I believe in my state that qualifies as a LEMON. 20 calendar days for a repair. I did not want to go that route just yet.

This is a very pro company Toyota site. Lol.

I’m not going to lie, I’d be a little pissed, just like anyone else would be on this site.

I wouldn’t jump ship to another brand, but I would likely upgrade and start over. What does the OP have to lose? Has temp tags, no payment, and if the dealership does him a solid, he won’t lose much on down payment and a great deal on an upgrade.

I would do just that. When looking for a vehicle replacement 5 years ago for the wife, I ran across several low mileage SUVs that had engine replacements. Those ads went to the ignore bin.

I would be pissed too. Idk what everyone is talking about on a brand new car to have engine failure is unacceptable. Even if they fixed it under warranty you’re paying a lot of money for this car each month just thinking to yourself wow it already had major issues at 1,500 miles.

    Screw brand loyalty.

Definitely at the least raise hell and get that extended warranty added on for free.

I'm with the others on not wanting it either, shoot I am still having a hard time knowing mine was taken apart for the cam tower seal repair. still has 30day tags and engine replacement is crazy, I would see what the dealer would do for you on another truck.

I like to know how you can make the dealer or Toyota to take it back? Sure, it sucks but they fixed it under warranty as they are required to do so. As far as trading it in on a different truck that is probably a bad idea because the OP will take a bath on the trade-in value. The free extended warranty is solely at Toyota's discretion, although it could be considered a reasonable request from the owner's point of view.

No matter how pissed you are Toyota has the law on it's side and demanding or ranting and raving will get you nothing. You have to be realistic here. I also never heard that a new engine lowers the value of a vehicle.

When doing a car fax, or running the VIN through Toyota, or most vehicle history apps, this will pop up. So if you seen:

    Service: Engine replacement
    Mileage:1500

Would you start questioning what happened? Was it in an accident? Stolen and joy rode to hell? What’s involved in a motor R&R? Did they do it correctly? Now it only has 2500 miles and selling....

When selling my Tundra, which took all of 12 hours, the potential new owner pulled the VIN and had a few questions about what Toyota entered into the database. It wasn’t horrible, but the person fat fingered the mileage and added a bunch. I spent hours with Carfax clearing this up. Nothing Toyota could take care of since it wasn’t their vehicle. The only saving grace was my front differential was replaced recently with the correct mileage, and three months prior was the mileage mishap.

Could you see how this might effect a sale?
