The issue is not the cost of the skid plate, it's shipping. Most places want $180 to ship it. Your best bet is to find an online price from a dealer close enough that will sell it at the online price but allow you to pick it up so that there are no shipping costs. I bought mine from Sparks Toyota in Myrtle Beach, SC. It was about $400. Since I was planning on going to Myrtle Beach anyway, I was able to stop by and pick it up so there was no shipping cost.

This. The box it's in is considered "oversized" according to UPS/FedEx guidelines. They charge a premium for shipping oversized packages.

I found a dealer locally that will sell the plate for around $400, but they say I need a hardware kit for around $118. Is that your experience?

I would like to know the answer to this myself. As I indicated early in this thread, I bought the TRD skid plate. I heard that it came with the hardware. It did have a spacer, and bolts inserted in all the holes. But I had a problem with the rear two bolts (the ones closest to the rear of the vehicle when installed). There are holes (several, actually) in the cross beam for the rear bolts to fit into, but there are no threads in the holes for the bolts to mate with. The rest of the bolts (other than the two rear most bolts) fit into the same holes used by the stock OEM skid plate.

I also had trouble getting the bolts aligned with the other holes as well. I did use a jack to raise the skid plate up to the holes - you will need one. But right now, my $400 TRD skid plate sits uninstalled.

Can anyone who has successfully bought and installed the TRW skid plate help the OP and myself by writing what their experience was like?

For whats its worth I considered the trd skid but the price to me is stupid. I looked at my factory skid it will do its job ! No i don't go rock climbing but I go off roading on trails in Michigan. The skid is nice to have in the winter going over hard ice chunks on the street from plows.
