so long story short. I screwed up one of my TRD Offroad rims and tire. Dealer wanted way too much for one of each. A very nice user of this fine forum gave me a great deal on four rims and tires with the sensors still in. We both have 2018 trucks. I getting the rims powder coated gloss black and the powder coater will snap pics of the sensor numbers. Question is do they need to be programmed to my truck or will the button under the dash do it. I think it won’t and the dealer said it’s 150 to program them. I’m asking because on my Tacoma same dealer wanted 1 hr labor to upgrade the maps in my Tacoma. I Bought the card and just inserted it. This is why I don’t trust them that they need to be programmed or it takes 1.5 hrs to do so. I did search for this and didn’t find anything.

They will need to be linked (programmed) to the truck. The serial numbers of the new sensors will need to be able to be seen by the trucks on board sensor, which can’t be done with the reset button.

    You can:
a - get a copy of Techstream software and program them yourself using the radio IDs along with other features

    Or

b - make an appointment with Discount Tire and they will do it free of charge in 5 minutes in the parking lot

    But the button won't work.

Thank you. I’ll see if I can get the software but go to a tire place if that doesn’t work out. I thought it was an attempted rape at the dealer but wanted to be sure.

I actually ordered this cable when I had my 2017 Tacoma but never used it. It's still in the bag and I located it in my garage. All I have to do is get the software and I'm gonna try it out.

Don't use the software that came with the cable.

Follow the link in my thread that I mention for correct software version. I went through approximately four hours of researching, and finding the right software that would offer the right features for our 2018 trucks. Let my time benefit you. :)

I installed it and am at a screen that is asking for dealer info and such. Is this correct?

I probably typical male read it. I am going to read it again. The version I have is different than what it refers to. I'll read it through and start over. Thank you.

Yep. It only takes us a couple of minutes to get this service done at any Discount Tire or America’s Tire.
You actually don’t even need an appointment. We will take you as a walk in all day every day except Sunday's (we’re closed Sunday).
Our scanner picks up the IDs by simply holding it near the valve stem on the outside of the tire. Then we plug into the OBD2 and write the IDs to the ECM.

My own personal experience taught me that they (insert any aftermarket tire shop here) won't be able to do it to a 2018+.

They can scan and read the sensor ID, but they can't don't have the ability to reprogram via their aftermarket obd software.

I've not read of a single person claiming that they were successful with anything less than tech stream.

To the other guys trying to help - I appreciate your sentiment, but unless you personally have done what is being asked on a 2018 Tundra successfully without techstream, you're spreading misinformation.

Op, one thing these guys don't have, that you and I do, is a 2018 truck.
I would like to be able to help you, but anything I will ask you is going to be covered either in my own thread, or the thread that I linked to in my thread.

Reading is the key here. ;)

If you read the thread, and follow what I had success with, and still have trouble, post a screen shot of where you're getting stuck and I'll see what I can do.

Ok. Nice. You should have no problem doing this community a service and answering these two questions.

    1. What hand scanner does your shop use to read sensor IDs?

    2. What obd tool/software does your shop use to program the IDs?

There's many documented instances on this forum of the method you're suggesting not working, with many using the same method I suggested to achieve success.

Did you install the mvci drivers before installing techstream?

What operating system are you using?

I did install before the software and I am using Windows 7. I ran that firmware utility and the adapter showed up, so I thought it would work. I can try more today. I am doing this at work while doing other stuff. Maybe I missed something. It was a domain machine before and I noticed the Vehicle Adapter Device isn't in device manager. Maybe the driver isn't installed correctly.

VEHICLE ADAPTER IS IN DEVICE MANAGER. I GOT EXCITED ABOUT THAT AND WENT BACK OUT TO MY TRUCK. NOW IT SAYS IT NEEDS A NEW KEY AND THE ONE WITH THE SOFTWARE WILL NOT WORK. I HAVE A FEW DAYS TO FIGURE THIS OUT. MY WHEELS ARE STILL BEING POWDER COATED. Damn, just looked up and realized my caps lock was on. I don't feel like retyping. No offense.

    Great

When researching, I found that everyone was using the same registration key (including myself). I'm not at a place that I can confirm, but I suspect if you search the thread I linked to, you'll find it.

I got the rims today and went by NTB (friend of mine works there and told me he could program them) His device couldn't read them. I went back to the powder coater and asked if he had pictures of the sensors ( I asked him to do this when I dropped them off) He said he did not and they should just learn them. I told reminded him when I dropped them off I would need the numbers so I could program or get them programmed. He agreed to get me old tires sensors out and change them over. Then my friend called me and said he got an update for his device and it shows 18 - 20 now. Went by there and he programmed them no problem. I love these black rims.

Just to be clear your buddy did an update on his TPMS tool that it now shows models 18-20.

I am very interested in that particular statement since I have been fighting the 2019 TPMS sensors that I just installed with my new wheels and tires on my 2020 Tundra.
It was assumed by many that the 2020 would likely have the same protocols as the 2018 and 2019 models. Which is why I had went with the 2019 TPMS sensors in my wheel and tire package. I updated my Autel TPMS tool last week as well but it only gives me 2018-2019. Autel the manufacture of my TPMS tool, tech support told me this morning that Toyota had not posted any protocol data to their website for any 2020 trucks only a few cars were showing up so far.

As of this morning it was looking like it might be a week to a couple months before I could get an update that would cover my TPMS tool up through the 2020s. After dozens of attempts I can see my codes in my truck and they are the correct codes for the wheels that are on it, the truck just cant seem to read them, the TPMS tool reads them just fine. At this point we are thinking the 2020 has to have a protocol change somehow effecting things.

So reading that someone else updated their TPMS tool and it is covering 2018-2020, that is really leaving me scratching my head as to what is wrong with my 2020 truck since I can't seem to get it to read these 2019 sensors.

Well, that's what he told me. I don't know what brand device he was using. It was black. It seems to be 30 seconds to a minute before pressure shows up. I don't know if this is normal because I didn't pay attention before. It sometimes takes about that long for the TPMS on my motorcycle, so it's probably normal. Anyway, he said he has 18 - 20 now.

    Thanks for the info.

I called and spoke with the local Toyota dealers parts department. They confirmed the sensors are the same part number 2018-2020.
    I appreciate the help.

I am taking my 2020 in today to the dealer to see if they can program the truck to read them. Since I have sensors programed for a 2019, they should be working.
Something else must be causing some issue. My Autel tool not being able to update to 2020 could be all that's wrong, I am just not patient enough to wait for Autel to come up with a 2020 model update. Hopefully the dealer can get mine sorted out.

    Thanks again for the info.

    Update:
Paid the local dealer $50 bucks to try and program my 2019 sensors to my 2020.
No luck, still didn't get it programmed, but I know now what the issue is. I am told the issue is there is a new sensor for 2020s only on the Tundra's with smart key option.
Since my Platinum does now have the smart key. These 2019 sensors will not work.

Since there wasn't a smart key system available on the 2019s at all none of the aftermarket nor factory sensors for 2019s will work on a smart key equipped 2020.
So in my case these 2019 sensors will never work in this 2020.
