I’ve got a 17 TRD and it’s quiet. If the dealer is still blowing smoke up your butt take a test drive in a different one on the lot.

Welcome from CO. Why not take a 17 from their lot to drive and compare?

Hi. Been lurking around this site but never create an account until now. I have interest in this topic too.

From what I've seen going through the forums is that our generation tundra makes this hum bc Toyota changed the exhaust system compared to prior generations. When cruising at the speed you mentioned @50-55mph, the hum is louder than if you cruise at 70mph. It's tolerable but definitely noticeable especially if you drive at that speed for an extended period.

There's a guy who goes by dirtydeeds that specializes in exhaust systems in the forums. He has posts in the performance section. I recalled that he mentioned a helmholtz resonator will quiet down the hum.. aka drone. What I was not able to confirm was if it only quiet down the drone on his exhaust setup or will it work with the stock exhaust. I'd love to get some feedback from someone who has the helmholtz resonator on a stock exhaust.

Kinda unfortunate that we have to spend extra money to quiet down the drone.

@dirtydeeds Keith see above, have you installed any on a stock exhaust?

Definitely take a test drive in a different Tundra. Maybe go to a different dealership and have a Tec ride with you. Sounds fishy to me

I had same issue. Mine was under acceleration rpm range of 1500-1800. Passenger floor board was where the sound was comn from. Had it at dealership for 2 days to locate problem.
They determined it was the ecm. Rattling came from it when the pulled it out and gave it a shook. Factory told dealership to replace it.
Just got it back today new computer no more annoying resonating / metal vibration sound.

It works. I recently sold Keith's 8 inch system with resonator, but was able to hear the stock system with and without the resonator. It is much quieter with the resonator. Everyone's ear is different. To me, 55 mph is the sweet spot for the drone. I would say the truck is 75% quieter (subjective) at 55 with the resonator and close to silent in the rest of the range.

I had an exhaust shop make and weld in a resonator after I sold the system, because I liked how quiet the truck is with it. It's a 26 inch long pipe 2 inches in diameter that is branched into the tailpipe and capped at the other end. I went this route because I had the block off plate welded onto the tailpipe to cover the original hole that I tapped with Keith's system, so I wasn't able to use Keith's bolt on resonator. But if I was starting from scratch, I wouldn't hesitate to buy the bolt in resonator that Keith sells. He has a video on his website that shows the install. If you like quiet and can't weld, it's money well spent.

Thanks for the feedback @17TundraDCEd .

@potatohillguy did you ever figure out the issue?

Been reading up on folks who installed the 8" ba exhaust and starting to sound like an option.

I just bought a 2017 Tundra CrewMax with the TRD Off-Road Package and 5.7L V8 from CarMax that had 5,700 miles on it, and I'm experiencing the exact same thing. It's a shame because I absolutely the love the truck otherwise, but all this noise is driving me crazy.

I'm taking it to my regular dealership today to have it looked at to see if anything can be done or if there's anything wrong with the vehicle. It almost sounds like the previous owner modified it with some aftermarket parts (Flowmasters, etc.) to intentionally make it loud. I just have a really hard time believing that this is how it's supposed to sound from the factory and that it's completely normal. If my dealership tells me it's the "nature of the beast" like they told you, then I'll likely return it. Luckily, CarMax allows customers to return vehicles within 5 days of purchase for a full refund, no questions asked.

Were you ever able to get a good resolution to this issue? My family has owned Toyotas for decades so I know firsthand how great they are (I've driven a 2006 Tundra for 12 years with no complaints), so it's mind-blowing to me that this is even a problem.
