Howdy! I know the awesome 2.5 gen dash swap is redonkulous, but I'm really just looking to upgrade my 2nd gen gauge cluster.

We know the biggest challenge is making it work with the 2nd gen gauge bezel. So my questions are:
    1. Can someone confirm the measurements of the 2.5 gen cluster by itself?
    2. Has anyone tried chopping up the 2nd gen bezel and fitting the 2.5 gen cluster into it?

I would be willing to bet that someone has tried it, even if it turned out ugly.

I think a 3D printer could help to make this a great swap.

In my opinion it’s easier to just swap the dash, that’s what I ended up doing. The size difference between the two is pretty substantial.

I would think the back of the dash would have to be cut out, mounts for the new cluster made and then a bezel made some how.

I took this quick picture of two I had laying around so you can see the comparison.

These are picture from a few years back when I first got the 14 cluster working in my 07. It’s just kind of laying in the 07 dash.

I don’t have my old dash anymore, if I did I could show you better how it “fits” in there.

Thanks for the reference pics! The stock Gen 2 bezel is so huge, incorperating switches and vents.

I'm thinking about chopping out most of the instrument panel area and replacing it with a 3D printed panel that adapts the Gen 2.5 cluster. I may make a fiberglass model first.

For someone who just wants a newer cluster, It could probably be done for under $300. Maybe even under $200 if the new cluster is cheap enough.

@Jeff_5_7 knows what he is doing. After all he does have one of the most impressive threads that I have ever seen in this forum. Check this out..... https://www.tundras.com/threads/the...014-conversion-front-clip-interior-bed.90281/

I say go for it. I have access to a Faro 3D scanner but it’s doesn’t do well with smaller objects. I don’t have a 3D printer nor have I used one. Basically if you can get it mounted and print a bezel that looks good visually it will work.

A few more things to think about:

Do some research on cluster part numbers. Fuel tank size, Flex Fuel vs non Flex Fuel, Sonar ect. You need to match up to the features your truck currently has.

A 14-17 cluster can generally be had on eBay for around $150, however almost all of them will have to have the milage value corrected inside the programming so it will match your vehicle. I have done several of these.

The wiring is straight forward ish. All the wires are just in different pin locations. I built a few patch harnesses a few years back to make it “plug and play”.

You might consider swapping the steering wheel also or you could just add a simple push (momentary switch) button to the dash to control scrolling through the displays of the cluster.

I forgot about controlling the display, good call. Swapping out the wheel would be the most finished look. I will check out your write-up on it.

For your build (2nd gen with 2018+ wheel) I know you said you ran wires to add functionality to some of the buttons. Did you have to install a 2018 clockspring too? Or do you still have the 2013 and down clockspring in?
I am trying to slowly do these swaps (just bought a 2018 wheel and airbag!) and would rather not get everything set up and then down the line realise I needed to change the clockspring too.

I used the factory 2007 clock spring. It’s just the “middle man” between the steering wheel controls and rest of the truck. I had to add wiring to the connector that plugs into the clockspring on the truck side.
