I'm starting to notice my engine is getting clattery (not a knock) when cold. It comes on about 20 seconds after startup once the fan clutch calms down. Starting to get a little nervous something is wrong. Engine has always been noisy cold but I think I am noticing it more lately. I bought the truck with 17k miles and it had 3 services according to Carfax by the time I got it. I have changed the oil religiously at 5000 miles or when the maintenance indicator comes on. Always Use Amsoil 0w20 and I was using TRD filters and later switched to Amsoil. Not sure what to think of it as I always take really good care of it. Don't know if I need to dump it before something pops... Trying to find a Toyota dealer (within an hour or so drive) with a good engine tech so I can get an honest opinion of what is going on. Any input? Thanks.

Switch to 5w-30 and report back.

The 5.7 is noisy. It's normal.

My 2015 was same, switched to amsoil, now quiet, it's pricey but it's the best

Used to be better before they switched formula. A few years ago, when I switched from amsoil to red line, only 10w30 was old good formula.

I'm not on PPU 5w30 in all 3 family vehicles, because I learned the hard way that best oil does not prevent engine burning valves :) It is good enough, affordable and Amazon brings it to door in one day.

    Toyota OE oil filter.

Ticking sounds could be valvetrain, which 5w30 oil can help quiet down. “Clattering” sounds more like timing chain tensioners to me.

What's the current mileage op? I agree with knabores that rattling is more than likely in the timing set and not the valvetrain. I'm at 215 and change and haven't heard it yet though.
