Hi, new member here and I apologize for a long first post. I have a 2012 double cab Tundra with a 4.6 L engine and the milage on the truck is right at 90K. A week ago, my alternator went out, and I took it to a shop for repair. When they reached out to me, they told me that the alternator was saturated with oil from a leaky timing chain cover gasket on the passenger side. They also told me that my water pump had a little bit of a leak. I got the alternator replaced, and they quoted me a price for replacing the timing chain cover gasket (I live in the San Francisco Bay area so labor isn't cheap) and a separate price (labor and parts) for replacing the water pump. Has anyone on this forum had any experience with oil saturating the alternator and causing it to fail? Also, if I have the timing chain cover gasket replaced, doesn't the water pump get removed as part of that repair?

Get a second opinion. Water pump comes off with timing cover job. If it were me. I'd get the water pump fixed and monitor the oil leak.

Thanks Wauto. I think that's what I'm going to do. I've never noticed any oil where I park, but it could be on the inside of the skid plate. I'm also going to shop around and try to find somewhere with less expensive labor.
