I replaced the starter with a reman Duralast (Autozone) and now in cold weather the starter makes an awful noise but it does start. Today my check engine light came on after it started. It went off after a few starts so I have not checked the codes. Here is a link to a video with the lovely noise.

Does it do that only on cold starts? It sounds like the pinion gear is stuck initially and not being thrown into the flywheel to turn it until moments later.

That definitely sounds like the starter is not engaging right away. It will eventually chew up the gears. It’s sticking.

Yes it only happens when it’s below 32 degrees.

I really don’t want to replace it. The first time was painful enough.

Mine did the same thing a few times when I replaced the starter last month (I agree ... painful job). It's going to sound dumb, but check your battery charge. Especially if your battery is older, the cold will sap some of its strength. My new starter hasn't "missed" at all since I started maintaining the battery. I just throw mine on the charge once a week and boost it back up to full. I know I'll eventually need a new battery, but for now it is fine.
