Hello, two times in the last 3 weeks I went to start my tundra and it wouldn't start after turning the key off and then turning the key on several times, then it finally started. Both times I have tried to turn it off and then turn it back on to start it around 10 or 15 times. Two different times the tundra had a mind of its own because it was turning over when the key was not cranked. It was cranking with my hand off the key. Very strange. I have a little code reader and plugged it in and there was no codes. Strange. Anybody have any ideas it's been starting okay lately but I'm worried that it's going to leave me stranded somewhere.

Bad contact inside the ignition switch perhaps?

I don't think you have to hold the key during cranking. If you initiate the cranking and let go of the key, it will continue to crank and complete the "start cycle" I don't know if that is what you are referring to, but that's my story and I'm sticking to it.
When it does not start and you cycle the key, is it cranking or just not doing anything? I had one time (also others have had the issue) where it will crank and not start or sputter for a few seconds and die. I disconnected the battery for a while and when I reconnected and started it it was fine and the issue has not happened since.

... so yes, I'm suggesting you reboot your truck...

Could be your battery going out as well. A dying battery can do all kinds of funky things with modern autos and electronics. Things completely unrelated, or so you would think can occur if the vehicles system is not getting the correct sustained power levels. Check it first and move on to other possibilities if the battery tests ok. If the battery is weak or a few years old I would just replace it, they are cheap.

Went thru all this late last year with the wifes car. Hers is a top level trim with every gizmo and electric thing possible. Had some funky and odd, unrelated things not work, or error, then her car would not start, other times it would. I thought I was in for several thousands of $$$ testing to find the real issue and repair of the electrical gremlins because the car was having issues with systems that were totally unrelated to each other.....except that they were electric and required a certain level of power to function properly. After a couple months of the strange issues it finally would not start at all, completely dead on all systems like a battery was not even in the car. Replaced the battery and everything works as designed.
