Can anyone tell me if the tag in the pic is also on the underside of their front diff from the factory?

I just bought this Tundra and I'm trying to determine if the previous owner replaced the front diff at some point in time, and that's why it's so clean and there's a QR code tag on it. I'm experiencing a gear box style "whining" sound only when in 4hi, and the gear oil was already replaced about 2 weeks ago.

Trying to decide whether I should rebuild or just replace the current front diff.

    Any help is appreciated.

There's a 2007 date code on there, so likely original.

The Tundra has a manufacture date of 06/07 in the top right corner of the door jamb plate. It's just hard to believe that it's original with how clean it is compared to everything else underneath.

Be aware that the needle bearing on the driver's side of the front diff is a known weak point on these trucks, and replacing it with a bushing is recommended (East Coast Gear Supply sells these). This doesn't sound like what you're experiencing, as generally there's a noise in 2WD and no noise in 4WD, but it's worth investigating. If you put a used front diff in to replace what you have, I would still get rid of the needle bearing on the replacement.

What's the "normal" amount of time for the 4hi light to stop flashing and illuminate solid after engaging the 4 wheel drive switch on the dash from 2hi to 4hi?

Mine takes about 5 seconds the first time (even after the Tundra is warmed up) and it will disengage immediately when I switch back to 2hi. However, after that I can re-engage a minute or so later back into 4hi, with no flashing wait time. My front wheels are always straight as I travel on gravel or dirt when using the 4 wheel drive switch; while rolling forward, usually no more than 30 mph.

Is the quick re-engagement of 4hi to be expected? Is the slow initial engagement of 4hi indicative of a pending issue?

That wouldn't be any cause for alarm.

@Drew1, audiowize is correct that if you were experiencing the front diff problem, you would hear the telltale cyclic growling in 2WD, especially between 25 to 45 mph and it would immediately go away when you engage 4WD. I just bought a replacement front diff from a 2010 Tundra to remedy mine. Had I known about swapping the roller bearing for a sleeve before purchasing the unit, I definitely would have gone that way- cheaper, easier and probably more robust than the needle bearing in the newer units.

A slight whining is normal in 4HI. If it turns out you have a problem with your transfer case, I can make you a sweet deal on the one in my '07. I'm swapping it out in a couple weeks for a t-case from a 2010 Sequoia for the AWD capability and I will no longer need the original unit.

I live in Hartford City, Indiana and work in Cincinnati Ohio.
This “clunk” you mention, is it like a one time clunk as you make a turn, such as pulling into a parking space or backing in to one? Reason I ask is that this was an issue I’ve had that turned out to be a bent tab on the camber adjustments. The can bolt would slide in the slop in a sharp turn.
Let me know if you’re interested in the transfer case- I’m thinking to list it on eBay ahead of the swap.

Are you including the 4wd ECU behind the glove box?

@Drew1 please let me know if you are interested in this transfer case. If not, I want to get it listed on eBay while it is still in the truck and in service vs. one that has been dismantled at a wrecking yard and sitting on a shelf. I think it will fetch more $$ this way on eBay, but I'd like to make you a good deal just the same, so let me know. I'll be swapping it out this Saturday.

    Thanks,

    Steve

How much do you want for the TC & ECU as a package?

How does $325 sound? I've always kept up on all fluid change intervals and in fact, just had this one done in August of last year. I'll know when I take it out, but I think I can leave the fluid in it. I'll also back it with a full year money back guarantee.

How close are you from Hartford City, Indiana and Cincinnati, Ohio? I'm back and forth every week and could possibly meet you somewhere. As far as shipping, my Sequoia transfer case shipped in a cardboard box via FedEx and much to my amazement, it survived although it was highly risky. I would recommend shipping from my work (commercial location) on a pallet, either way, you pay shipping.

There is a small steel bracket/plate that is somewhat tweaked on my new transfer, probably happened at the salvage yard. If it interchanges with the Tundra's, I'll probably swap it. Yours would be a direct fit.

    Just let me know.

    Steve

Does the TC make any noise in 4hi; like gear whine, etc?

No, just a very faint whine at highway speeds on a snow covered road as it always has.
