After 10 years finally decided to fix my dome light situation. Same problem as a lot of others with jacked up contact points pulling the old bulb out. Beyond repair. What I want to do is add an aftermarket surface mount light that will operate in its place. As much as I have poured over these forums, I cant figure out which wires to tap into from the ceiling. Any suggestions, ideas?

I am thinking tap to red for power, brown for ground, which leaves black wire untapped. Correct? See pics attached...

    Thanks in advance

I've been thinking of doing this so if you figure it out share your results. I assume one wire is constant power (since you can turn the light on by pressing it) and another is the courtesy lights that come on when the doors open. And ground is probably black.

I'd just cut and strip them and hook up a voltmeter to check different scenarios.
