My Tundra 4 wheel light is flashing on the dash and will not engage either in 4 high or 4 low. After looking around, I see that there is possibly 2 motors and actuators, one in the front and one in the rear. Is that correct?

And what it the procedure to fix this and possible diagnosis and cost? I priced a complete kit on Toyota's web site and it seems extremely expensive. My truck has 195 K miles on it but mechanically runs very well and I just put on new front and rear bumpers, new brake lines, has the new Toyota frame, a towing hitch and camper top; so would prefer to keep it if possible.

But if the repairs are too costly, maybe time to say good bye.

    Thanks for any input.

There’s a couple videos on YouTube referring to this problem.

here's what I want you to do. have a friend/wife/sibling/parent/dog sit in the cab while you crawl underneath the truck. have them turn the key to on, but don't start the truck. then, push the 4hi button while you listen to see if you hear the electric actuators move. one will be on the transfer case at the back of the transmission, and one will be at the passenger side of the from differential.

report back with results. if you only hear one, then you have your answer. ;) I had the front actuator go out on my truck. bought the one on rock auto for like $160. I put it in myself, but it was a royal pain.
