I have a 2014 SR5 CrewMax. Was driving yesterday and went to back up, went to put the truck in reverse and when i skipped over neutral it died. Then I slid it up into park and the starter automatically kicked on. Took the key out of the ignition and it still was going. Put the key back in the ignition and to the “ON” position and the truck started but the starter didn’t stop. Put the truck into reverse and the starter stopped. The Starter kicks on automatically when the truck is in Neutral or Park. Not when it’s in Reverse or Drive. I replaced the neutral safety switch and it didn’t fix it. Now I’m lost. Help…..

Do you have a remote start, specifically an aftermarket one that could be acting up?

How old is the battery? These trucks do some strange things when the battery is shot.

Just some probably not very well thought out ponderings one the matter. First, that pretty fucking weird, in a way that makes me chuckle to myself. Secondly, and after thinking about it a little more, I'm thinking that the Neutral Safety Switch is probably doing it's job, which it to prevent the starter from engaging when the gear selector is in gear. Next, I'm considering what is one of the first things that needs to happen to engage the starter; putting the key into the ignition switch and turning it. This brings to my mind the condition of the ignition switch. These things can wear out. Do you have "a lot" of keys on your key ring that could over time and lots of swinging about while driving, cause the mechanism to get all sloppy and continuing to create a "starting state"? Kind of just ramblings, but food for thought.

My ignition switch is not in the best condition. Since I bought the truck I was able to remove my key when the switch is in any position. So truck running I can take my key out lol. Definitely going to look into that.

I had corrosion on some relays and other electrical components in the passenger side kick panel that was giving me similar weird occurrences. Turns out some coolant got in there when the heater core was disconnected under the prior owner for a repair and corroded a bunch of things.
