1st Gen Tundra Phone Mount solutions?

Intrigued by some algorithm ad targeting and the bulletpoint phone mounts. They do not have a model for our trucks, as we don't have dash "pockets" that have become popular of late. They do however have a universal mount, that may (or may not) bend to fit the shape of our curvy dashes.

Also intrigued by @shifty` post on the 1stgenoffroad ashtray mod, but alas is currently sold out and I frankly like my phone mounted more in line with my field of view of the road.

Anybody else here have some creative solutions for a rugged phone mount at/near the dash? I have run iOttie suction cups in the past but like the idea of something sturdier and more permanent.

Seriously considering trying the bulletpoint mount, but will require drilling holes and some permanent modification. Like the idea of hanging a scangauge or trailer TPMS screen off it too.

 

I will say, my mount is still really doing its job. I've kinda become inseparable with it. I actually miss it when I'm in the wife's Highlander. But my phone is also too big for the Highlander's wireless charging tray.

 

Even if I don't use it for the phone, I'm going to buy one when he has them back in stock. Can think of a bunch of stuff to hang off there, potentially a better spot for a scangauge than the a pillar etc

 

Garmin adhesive mount (17mm ball) and an Iottie wireless charging mount is what I run.


For a rugged mount there is the molle panel mount that is made, that goes over the radio.

I’ve got the PanaVise in-dash mount that’s pretty rugged. It does require some cutting of the lip of the dash under the center face plate to make it flush. Mine came out pretty good but it required getting a right angle adapter for a dremel cutting wheel to make the cut clean.

I did have to remove it temporarily due to my Sirius sportster antenna going bad.

This gives me a good idea for a tablet mount. I do remote tower work, and a tablet mount would be super helpful. Thank you for sharing!

This is very sturdy. Overkill for smartphone maybe.

 

Very similar to mine, I still like it. Tiniest little wiggle on bumps, but quite still on the interstate. And magnetic charging.

I went through a few, kept returning them, then this one was a keeper. eBay or Amazon, I don't remember now. It's about 2 years old and has a "j" hook that grabs a vent louver and is snuggled up with a rotary knob. Simple, effective, and well made apparently, since it's still going strong after lots of use. It's almost in a perfect place, the right hand center vent. Just a bit of a reach, but the best solution I've found. As you've no doubt found out, not a lot of suitable mounting points in these old truck cabs. Great viewing angle for navigation.

 

Dumb question but is that garmin adhesive mount just flexible to fit the contour of the dash or did you find a curved one for sale from the manufacturer?
Looked for something like this on the jungle website last night but came up empty.

 

I actually own one of these already and I keep it in my travel kit for rental cars. funny thing is the more and more goofy modern dashes become the harder i'm finding it to have rental car vents that this thing can even attach to. It's a good mount when you have the right vents.

 

It's flexible.

 

I use a motorized grip Qi charger that mounts in the dash vent to the right of the wheel. Been working great for two years in my DD.

 

I have a ProClip, it works ok, but was wobbly with a Ram Mount and 6” extension. I ended up with a stick on metal plate on it, and RokForm magnetic case. Holds solid, but the phone is kinda at reach.

I have a similar J hook mount (Magsafe) in the same location but instead of hooking on the vent I hooked it to the edge of the dash cover/fascia inside the vent opening. Much more stable than the vent and still allows for some range of motion/adjustment of the vent... might want to give it a try.

 

I don't like covering up vents or having to look too far down away from windshield so I've used these magnetic based fone holders. I have them on multiple vehicles - atvs - sidexside and all hold up even in off-road situations. Inexpensive (about $10 for 2). I have multiple in some vehicles to hold mine - wifes and extra fone i use just for Torqpro.

Only "downside" is once the dash magnetic holder thing is put in place the manufacturer suggests not using it for 72hrs then all good.

My truck had one of those when I bought it. Wanted to use it but my phone case doesn't allow magnetic attachment, so I removed the mount. Can't decide if I should get a new case and go with magnetic mount, or get a non-magnetic mount. For now, I just put the phone in the cup holder. Where I live, it's pretty rare to need gps, which is about the only reason I use my phone in the truck. So it's not really an issue. But I'd still like a mount at some point.

That's the mount that I have, shown in the picture above. I am quite happy with it. It pairs nicely with a RAM mount.

 

I went ahead and ordered a vent mount like ericryder posted. $20. Cheap experiment.

 

I recently came across this great idea for a dash phone mount for the 1st gen Sequoia/Tundra. It uses a 3D print with YakAttack GT90 8" Track. It can be drilled into the dash or use double sided tape. The file is free with a small donation. I'm curious if anyone on this thread has access to a 3D printer? I found a shop in Albuquerque I might use if no one has access. Below I provided the link for the file and the install video. @AmericanKing06 that looks OUTSTANDING and fits the aesthetic of our trucks better than the MOLLE/grid panels. I do not have a 3D printer but would gladly shell out decent cash for that if someone here does and wants to make it for me.

 

I got a quote from a local company using ABS $68. I might go with them. I can possibly get two made and shipped out if you’re interested? I’ll get more details tomorrow when they open.

 

Not a terrible deal, except you'll still need to buy the actual phone mount. Not cheap, but does look nice. Way overkill just to mount a phone, but that's only my opinion, for my truck.

 

The good thing about the ashtray mod is you can mount other things to it besides a cell phone mount. You could mount something like....an ashtray to it.
