I saw 3 of them last week. They're even uglier in person for sure. Not sure on measurements but the parked one I saw barely fit in a normal space width wise.

Also off topic but I don't recommend the 19 hour drive from the Miami airport to my house. Miami airport is a disaster this week from thunderstorms so we ended up renting a car and driving back, otherwise we weren't getting home until Sunday.

Actually it looks like the front end of a charger and the back end of a magnum without the top.

The local salvage yard has a couple of complete 2uz's that I want to grab, but there's a couple of obstacles in the way.

    1. You must furnish your own hoist

    2. You cannot drive into the property

3.The Toyota section is 1/4+mile from the gate

    4.

So I have to get an engine hoist and tools to the donor trucks. On the way out I also have to transport the engine. Solving this puzzle means I can grab the big ticket items that few others are willing to. there's 2-3 uz's/ 2 a340's/ and several axles right now. I'm looking to do this on days where the yard is doing a "time sale" where being fast and efficient is the goal. 9AM-10AM 50% 10AM-12PM 40% 12PM-2PM 30%

    RICKSHAW.jpg

This started as a joke while talking to my brother about the task at hand, and then @bmf4069 seemed stoked on it. I think it actually has some merit.

Designed around two 20" bmx front wheels that I have on hand. Large wheels to roll over obstacles easier. Plenty of deck space to balance the load.

    Brilliant or tarded?

At the wrench a part by Frank, they have carts with old wheels and tires off cars. Those carts are heavy haha. So I say it's not a bad idea.

Add a gantry, battery, and a 1000lb winch. Setup the gantry and winch on a sliding system that goes off the rear or side of trailer. If not a full gantry, just a high point on the trailer you could anchor a pulley on.

Add a trailer hitch and trailer tires and it could be useful for lifting and moving stuff around the yard behind the trucn. Would take two people to wheel in and out of the junkyard at that weight though...

It needs a kickstand at the very least.

To clarify i'll grab one item each sale day. So just 1 engine/trans/axle etc. The trick is getting in and out before 12:00 for the best discount

I considered that, but like you said she gets hefty fast. The other thing is that a traditional engine hoist works and is familiar. No need to reinvent the wheel with that part.

I wonder how they actually expect people to pull an engine with rules like that.

I don't think it matters to them.

They give $200 for a complete car, set it in their yard for 6-12 months to make a $1k profit on small item sales, then crush what's left for scrap value. Multiply this by 1000's and its easy to see why they don't care to eek out every penny.

This sounds like an awesome idea. A lot of the PAP/PYP yards around here have wheelbarrows. They tend to be a little skinny-ish and anemic for anything substantial, but you make them work. Half the time if it's an innertube model, the tires are under pressure or straight-up flat, worthless. I always try to find ones that have solid tires.

I think where you'll hit a snag using BMX wheels is the fallability of the tires, the absence of genuinely fat tires. Maybe it's not a big deal if you carry around a pump and spare tubes everywhere, but problem #2 I see is, given the weight of the chassis, along with the weight of what's going on it, you may be up in the 50-75lb range depending on how you make this. Throw in a few hundred pounds of V8 engine, and suddenly the spokes in those wheels are liable to snap.

tl;dr - I know you want to use what you've got on-hand, but a solid wheel in the 12"-20" range, ideall no innertube, I think you'll have the best result. And I love @BroHon's idea, maybe you could use something like a boat/trailering wheel that'll allow you to balance the load.

I'm also wondering if the wheels wouldn't benefit from being 2/3 of the way to the front to complement the 3rd wheel closer to the handles. This will account for load shift and/or if the forward load is heavy.

You may want to consider mounting an old tire and/or creating a rig for an old beat up tire on the platform, old tires are great for holding/stabilizing engines without damaging the oil pan, it's how I was taught to do it as a kid. This may work better for SBC and inlines, I've never tried to haul anything like the 2UZ. Alternately, maybe the 2nd setup in this pic. Dunno. Don't forget provisions for ratchet straps/tiedowns on either side of the platform/barrow!

Maybe get all the work done the day/week prior then just pull it out the yard early AM the next sale day morning?

Nope, @912. It was a prereq for me when looking for a truck. I am a weirdo, I hate taking my hands off the wheel to touch the radio for vol/track skipping and answering the phone.

    Great points here.

Modern freestyle bmx parts are pretty bomber. I think in their new slow slow speed environment they would hold up. (F=ma) So in my head a 200lbs rider at 20-25 mph hitting a substantial jump is more force than a 500lb load at a walking pace. I could be totally off base here, the actual maths are above my head.

The tire width and puncture possibility is something I didn't think about. The idea originated with tall skinny trailer tires, but that was quickly ditched due to weight. A little wider but no too wide, with a better weight rating makes me think motorcycle front wheels.

Adjustable wheel positions would give some flexibility to the whole system. Move it forward or back 1/2 the wheels diameter to really dial in the balance on the handle.

Strapping the engine down was also overlooked. Ive got a couple of 16" bias ply trailer tires that would work great.

Pro mode would be bolting an engine stand plate to the bell housing and having the corresponding mount on the rickshaw somewhere near the centerline.

Im about to call the dealer to see if my crank trigger wheel is in, fuckers said two days on Wednesday.

If not I may dive into this tomorrow.

Awesome. But yeah, to the innertube dilemma. Imagine you're 1/3 of the way across the lot and blow a tire. Fully loaded. I'm assuming you'll mount the wheels to the side so removal isn't bad, but how are you gonna lift and prop that bastard to take the tire off and slap in a new tube?

Would be easy enough to whip up a flip-out leg or something to kickstand that side for tire change, but ... Solid tires also don't pop.

Thats a possibility too. It would be a balance of how to make it easy, but not so easy that somebody takes my hard earned junkyard booty.
