Im replacing seals and bearings on my rear axle. My ABS light has been on for a while and my tone ring is loose. Im planning to take this to a shop to press new seals and bearings in.

Before I order parts, does the loose tone ring mean the ring is bad or the tolerances on the axle are bad and I should get a new axle for that side? The retainer collar is in the right position so its not that the tone ring has slipped to far towards the center....

You have the axles out, and the ABS tone ring is loose on the axle so it can spin freely?

correct, axles are out. The driver side tone ring is loose and can spin freely. Wondering (before I take it to a shop and order parts) if a new tone ring would likely press on or if its an issue with the axle diameter from wear and tear maybe.....

Can ispect the axle and spec the ID of the ring and OD of the axle. Likely the tone ring made of softer material not the axle is the issue. Possible that this job was done before and tone ring reused? BTW you're aware of the correct placement of the bearings, retainers, and ring so that this can be conveyed to the shop?

Interesting problem. I’ve never heard of anyone having this issue before.
Are you the original owner of the truck? The ABS tone ring is 100% a reusable part which should never need to be replaced unless it’s damaged. So unless someone purposely ground down the ID of the tone ring or the OD of the axle to make it easier to install, I can’t think of how the fit could be loose.
    Do you have pics?

Unless they used a non-standard method to remove prior and caused damage?

Could measure OD of both axles to confirm they're in good shape and if find ID of tone ring is out, then press on a new one. Reused OEM on mine.

FWIW have heard one shop say they tack weld these in place when reusing as they aparently might come loose on some axles...maybe from different vehicles.
