1794 vs 1794 TRD do I really need that locking diff?

Hi all, I’m new here. I have decided to buy a 1794 2020 or 2021. One thing I can’t decide is if I need the TRD option or not.

I live in a very snowy area, and need something that doesn’t get stuck easy and if it does, can hopefully unstuck itself easily. Imagine 4 feet of snow in a day or so.

I don’t ever plan on rock climbing it, but it will see use towing occasionally, especially the snow machine trailer in winter. About as much off road it will get will be flat and dry and rutted up parking lots.

With this in mind, is it worth getting the TRD with locking diff? It’s about the only thing jamming me up right now.

Do these have any problems to be aware of? Any mods that are recommended?

It’s not a locking diff. It’s a simulated LSD that the truck uses the brakes to simulate.

I also live where it can snow feet in a day. Just make sure you have good snow tires. I’ve never had an issue going using 4wd on snowy roads. The biggest issue is stoppping. It’s a heavy truck. I used drive in S4 or S3 depending on speed on snowy icy roads to stop easier and not rely solely on the brakes.

Good tires and 400lbs in the bed will gain you steroidal traction! Go for the TRD option if you can...you gain "better" shocks and skid plates for important bit...albeit, those typically just get upgraded after a month on this forum...in that regard, forego the TRD options and save a few dollars to put towards better than OEM accessories...

Thanks for the responses! For some reason I thought the FTD’s came with a locking diff, maybe I misread!

Anyone got any lines on any good deals (preferably dealership)?

The 2022+ models have a locking diff option (can only use in 4Lo). The 2007-2021 models have ALSD. It's not a rear differential based locker, it's a traction control based braking controlled simulated limited slip. It works pretty well, and good news, is available on all 1794 models regardless package.

The new 2022+ gen has the locker with the TRD options.

On the prior ones, there is no locker. Not even on the TRD Pro.

Great choice on the 1794! Best trim IMO. The only thing I don't like is the chrome front end. I bought my 2020 1794 last month and tomorrow I'm swapping the front end.

I'm not anti chrome like many here. I'm leaving my handles chrome and all the interior alone. It's the front end only that bothers me lol

I flew to get mine. Drove back 6 hours.
