Any benefits or disadvantages of 17” wheels? I like to look of the bigger sidewall

You can do it. Just personal preference. 17”s here!

Issues with balancing the wheels? Some say the calipers knock the weights off

No issue with balancing. You have to use weights that are thin enough not to come into contact with the calipers.

I’ve had a couple different sets of 17s, no issues. I also prefer the look. If you like the look then you should go for it. They ride better, look better, typically lighter and are better for offroad if you do that. Nothing but benefits in my opinion.

I think everyone has provided all the advantages, let me chime in on two disadvantages I have seen,

    1. When balancing the tire/wheels, the technician needs to understand how close the wheels are to the brake caliper and the balancing weights need to be placed very close to the spoke and outer edge to not have them hit.

    2. Sometimes when I put on the wheel/tires myself, it takes a little finesse to put the wheel onto the hub because the balancing weight are so close to the caliper and is challenging for me to create a perfect alignment between the lugs and wheel.

    That's about it.

I align the holes on the wheels with the studs, put my long pry bar under the tire and lift up. With my 40s, each wheel weighs 130lbs and I don’t have any problems getting the tire on or hitting the balancing weights.

Another advantage: tires are cheaper. When i made the switch to 17s a year ago I figured 2 full sets of tires would save enough to pay for the wheels. 20220801_153441.jpg
