10 ply vs 8 ply

Can anyone tell me what major difference there is between a tire with a 10 ply sidewall (generally referred to as an "LT" tire) and an 8 ply sidewall? I understand that 10 ply (LT tires) are better for towing and off roading in that the sidewall can handle the weight for towing and heavy loads, and also are less prone to punctures from sharp objects like rocks. So what are 8 ply tires, are they just rated a little lower in their capacity for towing/heavy loads and puncture resistance?

Weight ratings. More layers of material/more strength, probably a higher max psi as well.

E rated tires will have a stiffer sidewall. They ride like crap but tire manufacturers are selling them to us so we don’t have much choice in the 18 inch wheel category. D rating would be plenty for our trucks. 20 years ago D rating was considered fine for any hd pickup
