Looking to buy a modified cargo trailer to camp in and haul my side by side. 7x16. 3800 pounds. My sxs will add approximately 2000 pounds. I know the TRD pro will technically pull this weight but is it a good idea? They have some lighter models but this is the one I want. IMG_7484.jpg

That looks like it could get nose heavy real fast.

I have the Westcott lift in the front now. I’m fine with adding airbags if that would help

My primary concern with a Pro is that it's leveled so you're going to "squat" when you tow. Weight wise, that would probably be pretty close to my trailer.

I have a 2020 Pro, tow about 5200/5400 loaded. Payload is usually 1100-1300. I added an Icon leaf pack and airbags. Have a Fox 2.5 adjustable 3” lift all around. The squat before adding those made driving real sketchy. Did it once for 50 miles and immediately installed the fix.

Are you planning to use a WDH? You might consider installing the Roadactive Suspension on your leaf springs.

You will most likely need a WDH and if the SxS can be loaded over the axles instead of in the front of the trailer you should be able to get the proper tongue weight and stay under GVWR in the Tundra.

I can. I guess I’m wondering what I should buy and install to make this work

What else are you planning to put in the truck when you tow? How many passengers? You towing through mountains with steep passes or pretty flat stuff? How often? How far? Lot's of questions to get to your best answer here. But in shorter form....

If you keep most of your weight in the trailer, load it to keep your tongue under control, and you dont go crazy with your load in the truck I think you'd be ok. But you definitely want to check your numbers at scales or with a tongue weight scale.

A WDH would be a must for this setup in my opinion. Functioning and adjusted trailer brakes are also a must.

It's also my opinion that I wouldn't put RAS or airbags on and fuck up that nice PRO ride you've got. "Squat" when you're towing isnt all bad. It's just your suspension doing its job. I think with most people it's a vanity thing honestly. They dont want their truck to look like it's towing when it's towing. Obviously you can overload the truck and the "squat" would be a bad thing in that case, but honestly you can load the rear well within payload capacity and you're going to see squat.

RAS and air bags WILL decrease ride quality when you're unloaded. I know some guys say they cant feel any difference or that it rides "even better" with 40psi in the bags, or some other shit, but in my option they're kidding themselves. When I hear this it makes me think of the guys pulling a 10k trailer and saying "I cant even tell it's back there!"...Uh, bullshit..... If you hook up airbags or RAS type suspension components it WILL limit travel, increase harshness, and generally decrease that sweet PRO ride you've got. I'd even go as far as wagering that with the PRO suspension, you'd notice a bigger decrease in unloaded ride comfort than if you were starting with a more basic suspension. That fox stuff is tuned pretty well.

I might suggest looking at upgrading your leaf pack. There are lots of options that will get you better management of payload and not compromise in the ride comfort category. Deaver, Alcan, Dobinson, OME, Icon, etc... all have upgraded leaf packs that will solve your problem better than band aids of air bags and RAS. New leafs may require new rear shocks, depending on some specific factors of the leaf pack/shock combo but I'll bet some of those would be a nice pairing with your existing fox pro's.

Another idea would be to get rid of the Tundra and move into a more suitable tow rig. Presumably, you're already using the SXS for the really fun off road driving so perhaps a 1 ton diesel would work better for tow duty? They're in a different league than the tundra for sure and you'd have no trouble towing that trailer with one. Maybe even look at the gasser 3/4 and 1 ton packages if diesel isnt your thing. They'll have even more available payload than the diesels and would work great for what you're looking at.

    Sweet trailer, btw.

You're right but Pros don't have any rake to begin with.

Perfect excuse for some Deavers then! :woot:

Towing performance probably wasnt at the top of the list of priorities when they put the PRO package together. Compromises must be made.
