What have you done to your 1st gen Tundra today?

Toying with the idea of a flat bed till a bed pops up for a good price.

I have a bed I’m going to pickup for my Tacoma in March. Hoping to have this truck ready so I can Go grab it

I actually bought the truck sight unseen. All I knew was it ran. I was going to put the engine and trans onto my spare Tacoma Frame. But presently surprised when I got the truck and found it would be so easily fixed. Going to get it to work Friday and put it on the alignment rack to check it all out

In May the owner put a new trans, transfer case, rear brakes, new master cylinder and brake booster. 2017 taco wheels and tires. And 02 sensors.

 

2001 2wd sr5 AT 182k

New lower and upper ball joints from Toyota. (Apparently I need a special fittings for the ball joint press, getting those on Monday)removed throttle body and thoroughly cleaned, cleaned maf sensor, new air filter, couple new hoses and cleaned engine.

 

Got my new CV Axles put in today. Not a terrible job to do. Hardest part was getting the new Axles to seat properly with that c-clip. I ended up using the c-clip off the Axles I took off. Took some patience and determination. Greasing it up and using grease to hold the c-clip centered and the opening on the bottom of the axle when installing helped.

No more loud knocks when turning... lol

Also did new axle seals while I was in there. My buddy had a bearing / seal installing kit which helped get the seals in evenly and to the right depth.

The angle on the inner boots is so much better now with the high angle boots compared to the non-high angle boots. I’ll have to get another picture of th angle next time I crawl under the truck.

Hopefully these will last for years to come!

Where you located? I see part out Tundras on Craiglist in Texas all the time.

V8 taco would be legit. But I think you'll find that the tundra is just a big taco. I call mine a Gordita. Lol

Yes, just the boot and grease. They are the stock oem’s I believe. You can also go the route @Rheywood456 just did with reman’s that come with the high angle boot ready to go.

Those power steering & break fluids are looking pretty done.

 

I've noticed the reservoir for my power steering fluid is stained. It makes the fluid look dirty even though I just replaced it.

 

I sort of recall putting ice & rock salt into a stained reservoir (coolant?) & shaking it clean - MANY years ago. Worked a charm & then rinse with warm water. Or was it ice & sugar...

do it. Had em on my 03 taco and loved em.

 

Haven’t driven her yet. Had to bleed the front drivers caliper and fill the front diff.

 

Never done anything like that. Google search says there is a good chance I'd end up chipping the chrome and it going south from there. What tool did you use?

 

Yes I did. I didn’t want them hanging down and get ripped off. This bumper will be replaced in the future.

 

Well I sanded my chrome down and primed and painted it blacks months in advance lol. But you should be able to prevent chipping by using tape and cutting thru the tape. I know it sounds crazy but it helps. Ask people who cut their fenders for 35s... Anyways my buddy cut em out for me after I made all the measurements and marks. He used a small handful held circle blade... Not sure it's actually name but it kinda looked like a grinder. He just made four shallow cuts for each light and ten hammered out the middle. Then I drilled and tapped the holes for screws.

Took the flat tires to work, remounted them all and balanced them. Seem to be good other than cosmetic damage.
Left front cv axle is twisted.. should need just a boot kit.
Control arm appears straight but the eccentric bolts have shifted. Fender and the inner support for it need to be replaced (bolt on). Honestly think she’ll be road worthy again by March

 

You guys impress the hell of out me with your skills. I wish some of you lived near me so I could watch. Youtube helps but I really need to see some things in person.

Are most of you guys self taught or did someone teach you how to do all this work?

 

YouTube, forums, manuals and patience. That’s why it has taken me 9 days to finish, quicker if I got time off work. That was by far the most extensive work I’ve done with suspension. I know everything’s torqued and installed properly but there’s always a part of me that gets a little doubtful.

 

Would look sharp with black rims. I'll trade ya mine

Self taught @FirstGenVol if I met my cars up I only can blame myself.

 

I think black DC’s look better with some contrast.
