Disable TPMS

I want to do this mod, maybe. I'm thinking that skipping the zener could be an issue. Definitely shorting the wrong wires for even an instant is mostly the culprit here.

I haven't heard of or seen anything either. Most issues appear to be "operator error + shortcuts".

 

And obviously the zener's correct orientation in the circuit is relevant, but you and I know enough to recognize that. Unless it's highlighted in the write up, and I don't recall if it was, it could be overlooked and open aforementioned can-o-worms.

 

Just to clarify about the TPMS sensors themselves. You do not necessarily need to take your truck to Toyota, to re calibrate them. Any good tire shop can and will do it while swapping out the wheels/tires. Yes it's a little more painful, having to either get new sensors, or having them swapped, but there are options besides, disabling the TPMS . My Last FJ had (2), sets of wheels tires . I just had one with sensors and one without, The light became white noise, I just never paid attention to. The more people that chime in with their results and procedure, the better. Probably should include Year/ model / engine/ trim level, etc . Some of that information is not relevant, but you never know.

 

The little black stripe or orange end is a good indicator. Some don't know this. Heck, some Zeners have a "+". Soldering it in backwards can be a bad thing. Most times the circuit won't work and nothing is hurt. Sometimes it's BAD. That's why I think the procedure is not being followed and/or inexperience. When in doubt I always ask. I learn something new everyday. That's what I like about what I do. Constantly changing. Keeps you on your toes.

 

Discount Tires replaced the TPMS sensors on my 09 Tacoma a few yrs ago. No problems at all. (my light is white noise to me now, heh heh)
Previous owner left off my sensors with new tires. I'll put them back when it's time.

 

Bought a module from the junkyard worked for about 15 min. Saw this post but didn't want to mess with the wireing. Opened up module case desoldered leg for light green wire and using diode jumped it to the yellow as described above. Light is now off and if you still keep factory look. Anal yes but no chance of damaging harness

Better yet get get some schedule forty pipe put sensors in with two end caps drill hole for rubber valve stem glue let dry add air pressure around 35 hide in truck lights gone everybodys happy!

 

Till the batteries die, but then you only have to do it again.

 

It's a dumb system anyways, getting rid of it completely is the way to go instead of buying new sensors for aftermarket wheels/factory wheels with different sensor angles.

I think it became a federal mandate due to those defective Firestone tires. Correct me if I'm not recalling correctly.

 

Easier way to disable it is to fool the system
2 real easy ways one cost a bit the other is free
Buy a wheel barrel tire wheel combo break the bead one one side shove the sensors in reinflate to 34 psi
Climb underneath and zip tie it up under the bed somewhere cost around 40 bucks
Free method ( what I did )drop the spare do same as above. Set it and forget it
If you get a flat no biggie I wrapped all 4 sensors in a cut up tee shirt and taped them together they'll just roll around in there if I need to drive on them for a short while
Been about a month no idiot light on

 

Yes, you can thank Ford Exploders and Firestone tires for TPMS. One lead to the other.

 

It's not an inspection requirement in NH anyways, so no need for me to have it, and disabling it completely is close to free and ensures you never have to worry about anything to do with TPMS ever again.

nice bypass mod, never seen this one before. Seen a few guys with big tires drop the spare tire pop front bead and drop in all 4 sensors air it up and put it back under, renders spare kinda useless but you could use it if you really had to just would ruin sensors rolling in there

 

Guys, I know this is an old thread, but I found it looking for a solution to silence the tpms sensor I personally don't need. So maybe this could help someone else out (I created an account to post this and thank you guys for your help). I read back and forth on the wiring solution and think I might have a different way to kill the light. When I got home tonight after two years of seeing it, but no value for me to get it resolved, I decided to unscrew the two screws in the top of the instrument panel. Once they were out, I then slid a flat head around and popped out the black housing. The glass part is plainly seen being secured by clips. Undo the clips, and you can pull it out then. At this point, you are more staring at the face of the number panel. Just run your hand around to the bottom edge and lift up lightly. You will see the bulb causing the alarm. I suppose you could crush it if you want, but I just cut a square of black electrical tape and put over it and laid the face back down. Voila, cannot see it any longer.

Like I said before I know this is a very old post, but thought maybe it might help someone. There is no messing with wiring, etc. I would say will level would be if you can install a stereo, or just speakers, then you can do it.

Is this process that same for all years truck?

 

If you go the spare tire route ($15.00, one and done):
You’re supposed to duck tape the sensors to the innner wheel of the spare. Then they don’t flop around in the spare tire and damage them if you ever need the spare.
You just have to make sure your spare tire keeps air, which is a good thing.
These stupid sensors piss me the fuck off when I want to run hunting roads for 7 days straight at 25 psi.

TPMS. It’s like PMS, but for your Tires.

 

Bringing this old post back from the dead, back on track. I agree with you that it looks like bstevens took pin 7 at 12v down to 4.4v and sent that to the indicator light which he calls light blue but is actually light green pin 5 (towards the combination meter, not fed back to the TPMS ECU).

It seems like the easy bet is to snip light green from pin 5 and splice the combination meter end into yellow pin 6 (right next door to it in the same row, not the other side of the connector). This will send 5V to the combination meter and break the link from TPMS ECU indicator pin direct to combination meter.

I'm gunna try it this way. Explains why two methods have worked and the ones that haven't worked seems like they have just jumpered stuff at random without understanding the concept or consequences.
