CAM SHAFT TOWER SEAL LEAKING ** PLEASE READ***

Nail on the friggin' head. It wouldn't be "broken" in upsteer's sense of the word, but people would be mad as hell.

 

I had a 2014 Silverado before the Tundy and it wasn't a bad truck for me at all. I couldn't find a crew cab 6' bed with 3.42 gears and chevy double cab was to small so here I am with a Tundra. I always see people post about things that happen to the big 3 trucks, but I have never had to have my engine torn down to fix a leak like I did on the Tundra on any of my Chevy's I had owned. I cannot speak to ford or dodge as I haven't ever owned either of those.

 

I will be following suit Monday myself. Here's to hoping they do both sides for both of us.

 

Exactly. I had a 2006 Chevy Colorado before getting a Tundra. The Colorado had 200k miles on it when I sold it in 2015 and never leaked a drop of oil. Very few issues with that truck and all happened at 100k or more in miles.

 

Got mine back today after both sides being repaired. Seems to be ok at the moment.

^That is exactly the problem with this thread. No one has proof that the problem is more than a few bad apples. But a lot of people are willing to bet that it is. A lot of assumptions and hype being generated over a few reported instances of oil leaks.

As for Toyota not solving the problem, they are offering free repairs for those vehicles under warranty. What more do you want out of Toyota?

A brand new vehicle leaking some oil isn't ideal, but at least Toyota is offering to fix vehicles with confirmed issues. A lot of other OEM's aren't so forthcoming with honoring their warranty.

I'm not, but I'm also not the one going around criticizing an OEM as being complacent and labeling one of their vehicles as "broken" because a few examples leak a little bit of oil.

I haven't see any oil leaks on any Tundra's in my area. If I had a warrantied Tundra leak oil, I'd take it into Toyota and defer to their judgement on how best to resolve the problem.

If you or @Atomic City Tundra have better ideas on how to resolve the oil leak, please offer them up. Because so far, all you 2 have done is whine and complain about how Toyota messed up.

 

I don't have any definitive info but I have read quite a bit of discussion elsewhere that indicates that the 5.7L (3UR-FE) used in the 200 series products (LC/LX 570) as well as the 4.6L (1UR-FE) used in the 150 series GX 460 are both made in Japan for those product lines.

That being said there are reports elsewhere that this can happen on a LC/LX 570 or GX 460 as well. Not as common but sales volumes are far lower too. I keep an eye on mine every few months on my '12 GX 460 and still solidly dry at 54K miles.

 

I have offered them up - you must have missed it. Design an actual gasket instead of this stupid FIP gasket. I can think of several styles of gaskets that would work just fine. Recessed grooves with o-rings, compliant rubber gasket couple with a groove or a step, hard gasket with a crush bead, step-joint with an o-ring, blah, blah, blah. Pretty much anything other than a FIP gasket which is too sensitive to installation errors and material variability.

Again, it doesn't matter what I say - you are convinced that there is no real problem here. You haven't seen any Tundras that are leaking. For a couple of months now, I have checked several I have seen parked in places that I go. I am running at about a 20% with a leak rate. But, this is just all anecdotal bullshit, right?

As far as criticizing Engineers - yeah, I do criticize them. I have worked with hundreds of Engineers over the years, and I am one. We aren't foolproof, we make mistakes. This seal design is not a good one.

 

Well I guess I have to sign myself up for the leaky camshaft tower club.... 2018 5.7 crewmax 4x4... 6032 very gentle miles. Both sides leaking. My truck has never seen snow, or salt. Hell It only saw rain once that I remember. It lives in a heated garage. Kinda bummed out.

 

Man. Lots of low mileage 18s with leaks.....

 

Way too many $45k + trucks with an oil leak. I almost did my own oil changes, now I'm glad that I had the dealer do it. My skin crawls every time I walk through the doors of any stealership. I can't wait to hear "we never see this!" or some other bull shit lame ass excuse. I will start the process of seeking the extended warranty on my truck. If they are as amazing and dependable as they claim then this warranty won't cost them a dime when these trucks perform flawlessly like they claim.

 

Good luck on the warranty, I was shot down. This is why I lease vehicles.

 

What do I want them to do? Fix the problem before it gets to the consumer, I don't think its to much to ask for my truck to not have a leaky engine before 25k miles. I don't understand how you don't see that as a problem.

Atomic is correct in saying that it is "broken" its designed not to leak oil and it has failed at doing so. If it was designed to leak oil they wouldn't put gasket material there in the first place. It is a failed component that they need to address at the production level and have failed to do so.

 

Any reports of 2019 leaks? Perhaps this has been addressed and we are not aware.

 

Owners have been saying that since 2008.

Hey. New guy here and just a new observation. Carry on.

 

I have 2 friends that also have Tundras with the 5.7’s, ones an 13 the other is a 15 and mines an 07. 2 of the 3 have cam tower leak . The 13 with 110,000 miles both sides my 07 with 68,000 miles just the drivers side.the 15 has 47,000 .

 

52 in the poll. 17%. Most people nowadays come straight to the internet to complain when they have a problem.

Yeah no. Most in this thread were members long before having to participate in this thread unfortunately. Don’t be one that says mine doesn’t leak, the one down the street doesn’t, it’s not a real issue. My 12, 16, and 18 all leaked, it is a real issue.

 

I just bought a new $50K truck. I have taken part of several vehicle forums in the past. I was hoping that this forum would not be the constant hating on the manufacturer and the mindset that "If I have a problem then obviously it must be widespread" whining on the internet is productive. It's not. Stating a problem and working together on a solution is good. Posting ad nauseam about it is not.
Good luck guys and for the guy who says FIP gaskets are not the solution? Remember that pre made gaskets are not always the best solution either. I have designed many both ways, depending on the application.
I really don't want to be part of a forum just like all the others with the constant whining.

Maybe he can just be a good example for the rest of us. If his 2019 starts leaking and needs to be opened up he can show us how we should behave by not being upset.

Exactly. I'd have eventually been fine if my cam tower leak got repaired and went back to normal, but my case is a shining example of what can happen once the engine gets opened up. They screwed something else up while they were in there and I ended up getting out of my truck.
