Well then ya got me beat. Second youngest. I'll take that third youngest title and accept it.

 

A little advice from an old guy who has seen a lot in his life, 24 years in the Navy can teach you a lot. I watched a general decline in the mechanical abilities of the younger generations of kids coming into the Navy. When I first joined I knew a lot of guys that grew up on farms in Nebraska, Texas, Ohio and Pennsylvania. These were guys that knew what a PTO was and how to work on hydraulics, weld, and turn wrenches. The closer I got to retirement the more worried I got about the blue collar skill set being almost non-existent in new kids coming in the Navy. I had kids that worked for me that did not know the difference between a combination wrench and a crescent wrench. I was a big believer in training my replacement, and did the best I could with what I had to work with.

Moral of the story, If you can find an old guy that can turn wrenches, you might want to stop by with some adult beverages when you see him working on something in the garage, you never know what new/old things you can learn.

I will try to pass on tidbits and secrets I have learned as I still believe in training my relief.

I think older guys are great, they remind us of how everything worked before Toyotas hit the streets. Ya know, back when everyone had to walk uphill to school both ways.

Geez I'm getting old too, I tell all the younger guys I work with that I remember back when gas cost less than a dollar a gallon.

 

I see this all the time in the Air Force. I grew up working with my hands, messing with quads and helping my dad out. There are kids coming in nowadays that don't know what a philips head screwdriver is or what an open ended wrench looks like. These are things that I just assumed people knew until I had to start training these kids. It's upsetting but at least they're learning now

The longer I've been managing people, the more I've learned how important it is to be patient while teaching them... no matter how much you're burning inside because you can't believe they don't know something you consider rudimentary.

It is upsetting sometimes, but then again there is plenty I can still learn so... stay humble is the trick I suppose.

A slap on the head is warranted for repeat lessons though.

 

Thank God I was born in 83 when Clint, the Marlboro man , Bruce Willis, chuck Norris, and many other men's men were considered unoffensive and pussies were still called pussies instead of creating a pseudo safe place. I'm gonna stop now before I get on a rant on the Pussification of the American male!!

Turned 29 on Sunday. Just picked up my first Tundra last Monday

 

Shit I was born in 92, grew up watching John Wayne and shooting prairie dogs out of a pickup with grandpa. Luckily I had the right upbringing in a farm family full of amateur wrestlers and gun lovers lol.

 

Tell me about it!.
I have been a machinist for 30 plus years. Recently I have been on a job search. I had 3 very good offers in one day of doing interviews. Seems companies cannot find machinists that know manual machines. Companies need repair machinists, tool makers, prototype machinists etc. All these new machine operators know these days is CNC button pushers in a production setting. Show them a Bridgeport mill or an engine lathe and they are lost.

 

Same here! No farm but same experiences!! Hell, had my first beer, first gun, and first knife at 5. All I had was a twin sister (we were the only kids in the family for a while) but that girl was tough enough! LOL
Dads side paw paw was a machinist, roughneck, and barge operator and loved fishing. Taught me how machines worked, how to fix them, how to fish, etc
Moms side was into hunting and trapping, camping, military type stuff. Taught me how to navigate, read maps (topography maps not the atlas crap), make fires, shoot, etc. and how to handle a Rambo knife (hence my first knife! Which I just found the other day!!)
I'm just thankful I was able to get those guys in my life and their knowledge as well as their values and convictions.

Life goal, carry on those things to my future son and grandsons.

I believe guys like us and most others on this forum are the luckiest bastards on Earth for growing up like that!!

 

Ouch!! Yep, whenever any one of my cousins brings home a new boyfriend and he's either wearing skinnies or driving a car, we rag on him, and it doesn't stop until they break up LOL youngest cousin is 18 so times running out!
Plus side, we got the most recent addition to buy a pickup truck (tundra of course!) from his Nissan z. Dude still can't park worth a shit!! LOL
Negative side- he still wears skinnies. That'll change soon.......

I'm about a generation removed from the farm, Grandpa on dad's side was farming a small amount of acreage when he was running a crop dusting outfit back in the late 70's and 80's. My dad got started working in agriculture being a field man for grandpa, he and my uncle have had pilots licenses since they were 18. My grandpa on my mom's side was a 5'4" 120 lb Marine who served for 3 years in Korea, actually had to eat a ton of bananas to make the minimum weight. He passed when I was 2 years old, but I think you have to be a bad fuckin dude to be a 120 lb Marine lol.

My future children will definitely learn some of those things I've learned early on!

This makes me so glad to speak with like minded patriots ages run from 20's-on up...multiple generations ..and you can see the positive effect of: honor courage leadership work ethic commitment. And it will take all of us as men to redirect this downward spiral we are living. Stay safe be vigilant be ready.
