Grinding sound/feel on front end

Lately I have been hearing a metal on metal, or bad bearing sound, or something like rubbing. This did come after my struts were installed, and not sure if it has to do with needing a differential drop kit or not.

Today I did take off my front wheels, pulled the brake pads out to see if I have one dragging, cleaned and re-lubed the necessary brake parts, and on the drivers side removed the caliper and rotor to see if it is just hitting the backing plate.

The rotor was rubbing the backing plate a little, but now it is not. I may have to paint the BP and then actually see if the rub is gone.

Last night one of my best friends turned 28 yrs old, and on the way home from his party I euthanized a house cat with the drivers front going 40 mph. That made me do the work today, and bend the backing plate back out.

I could not duplicate the noise with my hands, but after about 15 mph it starts, sometimes not. Weird.

Maybe I should paint the backing plate to ensure there is no rubbing.

There is a jack stand under the frame, but good reminder for those that trust hydraulics (I do not).

 

Yeah, think that is the next stop for me. Paint time.

Caliper has been checked. My supervisor pushed down on the brake pedal without pads and all the caliper pistons came out like normal.

Wondering about the front diff?

 

Brake calipers worked as normal.

Well, I could say it is a growl. Maybe I can take a sound clip.

The driveshaft gets lubed every other oil change, or 10k miles.

 

The diff fluids are swapped out every 25k.

Now this is what I am wondering about drive shaft angles. I'll go take a shot of the angle.

 

I also got a measurement of the front lift.

Stock was 36 5/8 and now it is 37 3/8.




So I went up under 1".

 

That is what I thought, but it is good to have a second opinion. Maybe I'm nuts.

When I swap tires, and move up to a 275/70/18, I plan on taking the shocks up a little more. That is why I ordered the diff drop.

I think the proper way to troubleshoot this is to start with the easy. Paint.

 

I even think there is some in my garage.

What a PITA, but I would rather find out the front diff is going south before 100K miles.

 

This is what I am afraid of. 100,002 miles and a FO at the dealership.

This would not surprise me one bit though. I towed 300 continuous miles in a really tough blizzard. This is how we started from Cortez, CO:

I have also used 4wd with the camper, the flatbed trailer...etc.

This load was in 4Low for a while....



If this is the case, the other half said to go get a 1 ton, but she has been very impressed with how this truck has handled what we do with it. I said they can replace it and we can go another 60K and then sell it.

 

I am at 78K.

 

I know people with 4 point lifts...but the heals and mini skirt is a go!

 

I tried getting a sound clip of issue today. My iPhone just picks up all the road noise.

I am also going to swap the front and rear tire to see if that moves the sound.

 

Been down that road. Like phones that work. Lol.

Need to find this issue guys. My neighbor has a Raptor and shakes his head as he drives by much as I have been under it lately. He even stopped yesterday and mentioned if I had a ford this wouldn't happen.
