You do want to have a gap too. The body panels will end up flexing and rub on the bumper. I've seen some trucks with cracked front grills and the plastic under the headlights rubbing.

 

Same, mines still a little off, but not as bad.

How much does that ADD bumper weigh? I like that the Pelfreybilt one is only 100lbs plus winch.

Around 120 - 130 i believe. Website showing shipping weight as 160 but that pallet and packing material was a lot of weight.

 

Pelfreybilt, they threw it in when I ordered the bumper. I forget why, but I didn't complain.

I love this bumper but besides the cost, another flaw is how tight it is against the body. There is reason Toyota has a gap (about an inch) between bumper and body, flex. My gap on stock bumper is even when on level ground but frame and body flex as shown in the pix when on uneven surface. These type of bumper is primarily designed for looks, but I do like the look. However, for me, function will always be primary and looks secondary.

For those wondering earlier in this thread, there is the possibility that your skid plates may interfere with bumper install and proper alignment. I took my truck to ADD today because I couldn’t get it properly aligned. They ended up concluding that my RCI engine skid plate was part of the problem and they trimmed the front lip to flush it up with the cross member. Bumper alignment is now perfect.

Huge props to ADD for doing all this work for me, they definitely care about their customers and want you to be happy no matter what.

What function are you referring to? Wheeling?

 

Design function. In this case, there is a need for a gap between the body and bumper. The design function (purpose) of the gap is avoid contact between the body and bumper when the truck is flexing. I'm sure there many scenarios that can induce flexing, one of them is when truck in under full articulation as shown in my pix.

 

If ur not wheeling ur truck, Why really worry about articulation. And if articulation is a concern, ditch the sway bar, take the same pic, and see how much that bumper is shifted

My bumper hugs tight. Doesn’t interfere with my fenders. And My truck sees trails more than pavement with plenty of articulation. My bumper hugged the stock fenders even tighter. No issues

 

I do try to wheel my truck at least once a month. I have my reason for having the sway bar, like driving the vehicle on road 97% of the time. Let's leave it at the gap between the bumper and body has a purpose. Knowing that, do as you please.

 

Toyota did a lot of things for “purpose” that I changed dramatically for better function of my needs. But at the end of the day, do as u please is the key here.

So why post about someone spending their hard earned money on a bumper just to explain why u think it’s basically a bad choice.

 

I’m just stating the reason for the gap. Most people, maybe it applies to you or not, don’t know the reason for the gap. ADD design it to have no gap, which is bad when the truck flex (this is a fact). ADD went for the look, which is fine. I’m just giving my information, people can do as they please with that info. This is what’s the forum about, providing info.

BTW, you can get flex when going through speed bump at certain speed. I’ve seen it. Other people have reported rubbing paint off from body with bumper with no gap. I think it was on this forum, maybe within this thread. You don’t need to offroad to have issue for not having a gap.

Maybe he cares more about clearance and approach angle than a little paint rubbing on his fenders. I still don’t see the need to post in someone else’s thread your reasons why their bumper wasn’t a good choice. I could do the same for some of the stuff on ur truck but there’s no point, it’s ur truck.

But I’ll come to u for advice when I redo my rear suspension setup. U obviously know ur stuff

 

I merely expressed my opinion, which the last time I check it is allowed, lol. The thread is not close to any of us forum member. I think most people post and expect reaction; good, bad or meh. Also, I didn’t say he/she made a bad choice. I just pointed out the deficiency of the design. If people are OK with the said design deficiency and got it, at least they made an informed decision. As I said, I actually like the look, one of the best out there in my opinion...just need that one inch gap minimum, lol.

And yeah, I know my stuff. At least the ones coming out my ass and also what I comment about, lol. If not, I go to the internet and have this in depth discussion
