Kind of torn between these two trucks. I know the Tundra will be a heck more reliable and solid all around. No cylinder deactivation to deal with.

What are some good compelling reasons to get the Tundra TRD Sport over a High Country Silverado LTZ w/ the 6.2?

You already mentioned the most compelling reasons to buy Toyota. It'll also hold its value better than the Chevy. It's just money better spent.

The frame of your Chevy will rust as soon as it leaves the lot. 3 years of Wisconsin salt and still no rust.

Cylinder deactivation would be the dropping point for me.

The fact that Toyota paid back their bailout loans quickly vs GM (government motors) sticking it to the tax payers for 10 billion swayed me toward Toyota. GM may need another handout too.

Everything above plus... 5.7L combined with 4.30 differential beats the 6.2L as far as "fun factor" in my opinion. I drove both when I was looking a couple months back. You're losing some features in the TRD Sport vs the LTZ because it's a lower level of trim (SR5), but it should also be quite a bit cheaper. My TRD Sport was $38K, I wouldn't expect to get the LTZ with 6.2L for less than $46-48K. Hope this helps, good luck!

^ X2 on cylinder deactivation. I have 5.3l chevy with afm and not a fan of the cylinder deactivation at all. Prevented me from even looking at a new pickup from GM. It can be deactivated but you still have all the moving parts and afm lifters that can collapse and cause internal damage. There is a speed shop here in central texas that will sell a cam kit that reverts the motor back to non afm internals. Something worth doing if i have a lifter collapse on my current tahoe. I really like the gmc 2500 but no need for one just yet :)

You didn't specify the exact trims (LTZ and High Country are distinct trim levels; I'll assume you meant High Country). But taking a guess, the Silverado High Country is going to cost more (high country is the top trim for silverado; trd sport is a package for the sr5 trim on the tundra, so not top trim). Cost is always a big point for me so I would go with the Tundra (and, as others have pointed out, the Tundra over the years will be far more reliable). Good luck with your truck shopping!

the 6.2 needs premium fuel and uses direct injection which means injection service at regular intervals

My last truck was a gmc seirra with a 5.3 v8 and had the cylinder deactivation. I hated that. The truck never left me stranded though. All around was a good truck but I did have quite a few problems and glad I traded it for my tundra last week. The tundra is a much more solidly built truck and as others have stated tends to be the most reliable. Gas mileage and range is better on my tundra than my gmc was. If this truck holds up to its reputation I will never buy another brand angain

These are ALL very compelling reasons!

Thanks guys. Yeah price is a big thing too. Why would I pay more for something that isn't as reliable and better built?

I guess I've always had good luck with Chevys but then again I've never owned one over 100k miles. The Tundra is a truck that I intend to keep for a long time.

The Silverados do handle and drive very well thought. But I gotta test drive the TRD Sport and see how it compares.

Wow! That is a dealer maker right there. No way I could get an LTZ for that price. Was that for a brand new one? It looks like Toyota only has deals at the end of the year with $6000 off. My dealership doesn't seem to want to negotiate.

May I ask what all options you got with your TRD Sport? I just want the SR5 upgrade so I can get the bigger fuel tank and heated seated, and then some nerf bars and TRD exhaust.

Brand new, but it was an '18, so I got a better deal since the '19s were on the lot. TRD Sport 4x4, deck rail system, Premium audio w/nav, SR5 upgrade package (38 gallon tank), TRD Sport Convenience packages, toyoguard platinum, spray-in bedliner, tint.

And what the MSRP? Wondering how low Toyota will go if I snag a 19 before the 2020s hit. I’m guessing since the one I’d get would be similar to yours price maybe the same. I wouldn’t need the convenience package though

Total MSRP: $48, 283, talked them down to $38,100. $1000 was military rebate and I used Toyota for financing. I emailed four different dealers and found the one that wanted my business the most, if a dealer isn't willing to give you real numbers through email/phone, then they're not worth dealing with IMO. Most want to get you to their dealership so they can use their sales tactics, because those tactics work on a lot of people. I shopped for a few weeks before deciding.

How much haggling did you do? For example did you start at like 35k and kept having them go down? Also is it better to negotiate on phone or internet? I’m guessing when you test drove the truck they wanted you to sit down and talk out a deal.

    Thanks

I test drove a tundra at a local dealership and gave them a chance to give me a good deal and left when they just gave me the standard rebates. Then I started with emailing a few dealers to see who wanted my business and ended up calling the one who actually tried to earn my business. I went to that dealership and left once because I wanted an extra $1k off, they eventually came down to what I wanted a week later. Biggest rule for me is to always be willing to walk away. It's not fun, but if you want a good deal, you have to convince most dealers before they really give you their bottom line. They probably profited max of $2K on my trade, so $8K discount is what I would consider a great deal on tundras (about 17% off). I wouldn't settle for anything less than 25% off any of the big three. Memorial/Labor days are prob the best holidays to shop around, EOM, and when new year models are coming out. Man, I know way too much about buying new cars...hopefully I can keep this one for 10 years instead of the 3 years I've been averaging lately...
