Which intake should I buy?

Hey guys. I have a 14 crewmax TRD and want to buy an intake but not sure which one to buy? I see a lot of recommendations for K&N but also seeing there's a 63 or 77 series? I dont know much about them and would love some advice on recommended brands and models! Thanks!

 

You have a CAI already. Save your money. You might consider an AFE or K&N drop in filter.

 

I would stay far away from any oiled filters if you plan on doing anything dusty or sandy. I’ve swapped my k&n out for an oem filter after seeing how plugged off it was after running into the nearby dunes.

 

Been using oiled K&N's for almost 50 years with ZERO issues in all climates. Just sayin...K&N's were designed for the exact conditions you mentioned...Everytime I'd 4X4 the the dunes near Winchester Bay , Oregon I'd check and clean my filter if necessary after I got back home. K&N's excel at keeping out dust & sand particles. Used them on my dirt bikes too back in the 70's too when running on the dunes.

K&n pre filter would help shed a lot of sand and dirt though. I used to run those on my quad filters. I should look into that for the old k&n

 

I keep mine very lightly oiled. Too much oil can cause issues for sure.

 

Gauze filters are horrible for silt. But it'll sure help you hone your cylinders. They are an old design, they flow well for a reason.

Anyone that has one, throw some grease in the runner after the filter, run it a year and check that grease, you have a layer of really really fine powder sticking to it.

 

For sure MAF sensors hate oil.

 

I posted a short write up on K&N's. Actually the last time I cleaned mine with pics. My Tundra is 11+ years old now and the MAF looks like new.

 

Most people over oil them. I wish someone would make a foam filter. I'd jump all over that. Like a UNI or TwinAir

 

The early K&N's that I used on my dirt bikes were foam. Worked quite well but you needed to clean them a lot. Every outing for sure. Seems to me K&N could come up with a foam version of some sorts.

 

So what I'm getting out of this is replace the filter but not the whole intake?

 

If you do go this route, it would help to get another filter, cause you need to properly let the washed one dry naturally, I have the S&B CAI n got me an extra filter

 

It’s true. Just replace the filter. Don’t replace the intake.

You can also do:

Stock Air Box Mod
Throttle body coolant bypass mod
And add 10% e85

All of the above are nearly free/free and are well worth the effort.

 

Do what he said really helps I've done everything Keith said I have Volant intake with new filter that's good for 80k with service of you want to buy....other wise I recommend what Keith said about E85 I've been doing this for 2 months now and makes a difference also the other 2 mods work

 

S&B makes some great filters and the intake doesn’t look too bad either. No huge gains to speak of, but it sounds and looks good!

 

I have that same one, also have an extra filter so I don't wait for washed one to dry, I like the new style one too

 

Like @ARamirez73 and @BHarry, I too have the S&B. And just like @Grey Wolf noted, I've ran K&N on every vehicle I've had for nearly 20 years...no issues at all...the trick with any oiled filter is don't over oil.

When you change your engine oil, clean the filter, air dry and reoil. Regardless of what you get, take the time when you're taking out the filter and disconnect your intake tube. Get a can of CNC's MAF sensor cleaner and spray off the MAFS (always in the direction of air-flow). About 2-3, 5-second bursts is usually all it takes.
For the first few days/weeks following an oil change/ doing this, I average 15+ mpgs….on 3" of lift, running 35X12.5, R20 tires...

All said, the TB coolant bypass @dirtydeeds mentioned is a must!!!
If you really want to add some free hps and get the best air transfer, you'll have to look into (gasket matching) porting and polishing...Starting from intake tube, to TB, manifold. If you have the means, of course there's always the heads too....

 

S&B makes the best filters IMHO. Best filtration. Numbers don't lie. Wish S&B would offer dry and wet drop in versions for the Tundra. I'd seriously consider that S&B cai for the filtration abilities alone.

 

TRD 'cause it's pretty

 

I installed AFE power. It sounds pretty good with their exhaust.

 

Honestly, Toyota has a really good stock design. Just swap the filter with a K&N or TRD and you're good to go. IF you really want to spend the money on a CAI, get the TRD one but you're better of saving the money.

 

That’s a nice looking intake. I just don’t like that it has an inlet from the engine bay. Sucking hot air in. I would probably cap that off.

 

It is capped off. I’m guessing it’s going to be for a future scope that uses the bulge opening. They have something like that for the Tacoma.

 

I ended up doing the TRD air flow accelerator mod to my stock box. Only about $20 to do. I know the TRD intake looks amazing, but it uses the bottom half of the stock box.
