Gas mileage when towing?

What kind of gas mileage ppl getting when towing?

Thanks never been on one of these things before. Just curious how ppl feel when towing with their tundras

Welcome. What kind of terrain? Highway or in town? How much weight?

Lots of factors to consider. Short answer will be less then you get empty obviously.

To answer that question from my experience anywhere from 9.5 to 17. That’s highway pulling a quad trailer with 3 quads on a pretty even surface. That was the same highway only difference was speed. 55-75’ish...maybe faster...ok it was faster.

Also lifted with 35’s.

 

I get about 9-10mpg when towing a travel trailer, bed half full of wood, and the fam. That’s on flat-ish ground and the trailer weighs around 7500lbs loaded.

 

Center console boat, with T-top, fair amount of wind resistance, 4500#. 60-65 mph, gentle rolling hills, 9 mpg with 15-20 mph headwind, 11-12 mpg with same tailwind.

 

worse than 15 mpg for sure! I rented the largest enclosed uhaul trailer and drove from Little Rock to Dallas and that thing was packed from floor to roof. No idea on how much weight but I can tell you I got no more than 10 mpg on the way back driving 65 mph.

This summer we towed my 21 foot hardtop boat and tons of equipment from South Whidbey Island to Gold River, BC (Nootka Sound). About 700 miles round trip and the truck was amazing, even on the long uphills over the mountains. Averaged about 10 mpg, and the truck handled the boat extremely well.

8-9 mpg towing 3k lb trailer with two bikes, wood, generator etc. in the bed.

 

4.7 2wd around 7 with my 4runner on a trailer, probably weighs around 6500 and has a lot of wind resistance due to the truck sticking above the tundra.

 

For me in Rocky Mtn's with "fake" 35's rule of thumb is - greater than 4K pounds = 7-9 MPG, less than 4K punts = 10-12 MPG.

 

I pulled a 3300 pound dry 1973 Fleetwood TT (old, square, blocky, not at all aerodynamic) from California to Louisiana and back got about 8 MPG going 70 mph. There were 4 of us in the truck with supplies, so it was considerably more weight.

 

I see it this way, all bets are off when you hook up to anything with size or weight. You get what you get, the faster you go =less.

Hello everyone,
I currently do NOT have a Tundra. As of right now, I have a 07 Tacoma SR5. However, I am THINKING of getting a 2016 TRD SR5 CrewMax or possibly a 2016 Chevy Silverado Z71. The reason for this is because I also just bought a 24' Travel Trailer (estimated high 5300 lbs loaded with what we need) so wanted something a little more suitable to tow it even though the Taco could do it with effort.

So it seems no matter which way I go, MPG is going to take a hit but I would like to hear opinions. Even thought the Taco gets better MPG than these two beasts when not towing, when towing it will drop down to roughly 10 MPG.

So these are some specs from the vehicles
Tundra 5.7L V-8 cyl, 26 gal fuel tank = 13 / 17 MPG
Chevy 5.3L ECOTEC3 V8 ENGINE, 26 gal fuel tank = 16 / 22 MPG
Taco 4.0L Gas V6, 21 gal fuel tank = 19 /21 MPG

Although the Tundra gets crappy MPG regularly, would it drop down below the 10 MPG towing the weight listed above?

Over all thoughts? If you had to do things over again, would any of you all gone with some other type of truck?

1. It will depend on the terrain. Long flat hauls are your friend.
2. Would you rather get 9.5mpg and be absolutely reliable and in control with a Tundra or get 12mpg white knuckling and revving the Silverado? I wouldn’t consider towing that weight long distance with the taco.
3. No, Tundra is perfect for towing 5,000-8,000 lbs.

ETA find a Tundra with a 38 gallon tank.

 

for towing under 8000 lbs. I would still buy a Tundra and I did a lot of research.

If I had to tow more (10000+), I would prefer a diesel.

 

Could you explain why you feel there would be white knuckling on the Chevy? revving? Just trying to understand because the Chevy is tow rated up to 12k while the Tundra only at 10K. I would never come close to either, however.

 

In fairness, all my experience with GM half tons is in the suburban / Yukon xl platform. I’ve had 3 with the 5.3 and all of them left me wanting significantly more power. You also have to be cognizant of the transmissions in those trucks - the 8 speeds are known have major TC issues causing shudder.

Although capable, the GM never felt as confident or capable towing a significant load. In my experience, it is sluggish on acceleration and I’ve had a bit of porpoising over bumps at speed.

My wife is now on our 4th GM half ton - this time a Yukon XL with a 6.2. While the new engine addressed the power issue, the suspension stability, braking and confidence issues remain when compared to towing with the Tundra.

In fairness, my Tundra had the TRD Off road package and has been upgraded and only 1 GM had the Z71 package.

 

It's never pretty.

 

Ugh, decisions decisions. Do you think people back in the 1800's spent this much time trying to figure out what horse and carriage to buy, lol? Well shoot, I am really torn. I like the way the Tundra looks and feels, very much like my Taco. However, I fear having to fill up the tank every week as opposed to close to two weeks on the Taco. I would guess with the Chevy's EcoBoost during every day commuting would be similar to the Taco in gas mileage. These are the two I was checking out. The Chevy does have a lot of nice features the Tundra does not which make it even harder.

When I pull my 5k travel trailer I get 11-12. When I pull my 20ft boat 13-14. I have a stock double cab and I never go over 55 mph. I get 16-17 mpg no trailer for comparison.
