My truck has done this since I purchased it used with 80k miles. Currently at 166k miles.

In two wheel drive there is a sound from front axle, kind of a wub-wub-wub noise more noticeable at low speeds. There was a service bulletin addressing this for the 2007 models (maybe other years, not sure). Bulletin basically said disassemble, inspect, if nothing is found then replace entire assembly. When I first noticed it I checked some forums. Read a couple others had same issue and just kept driving. They were in the 200 thousand mile range without any trouble other than the noise. In 4wd the noise goes away. Sometimes if I disengage at just the right moment it doesn't do it. I haven't exactly pinpointed just the right moment, sometimes it's in reverse, sometimes in forward while coasting, decelerating, or under light throttle. It seems to go away after a long trip also.

I'm curious if anyone has been inside one of these axles and located the cause, or found a fix for it.

Sounds like it’s not fully disengaging every time. Have you changed the fluid to see how it looks? Could either be in the transfer case or the front differential. Maybe even possibly the actuator itself. Sorry don’t have any experience with this problem, these are just my thoughts.

Was confused as well. It’s a four-wheel-drive but it makes the noise when he’s got it in 2X. At least that’s what I got from that

    Bingo! Thanks for the info.

Was looking at it today. Definitely more play on drivers versus passenger side. Fluid is up and is clean. No leaks.

    Yep, you got it.

Seeing the video makes it seem odd that it is quieter at times. Maybe I'm just used to it. Toyota's fix is replace differential assembly and east coast has a fix for 80 bucks. I've got some pullers and installers that will work in there. It's going to have to wait. Headed to Tennessee tomorrow. Hope it makes it another 2,000 miles.
