What's in your tank? AAA says gasolines with more detergent save money in the long run

I'm so laughing at this article.

Anyone believe what AAA puts out your are in the same boat as consumer reports...

Both are great for toilet paper..

 

Check out the list of Top Tier gas stations. http://www.toptiergas.com/ A few extra pennies per gallon can make a lot of difference in mileage and engine longevity.

 

I try to get E0 and avoid the places that top off their tanks with a garden hose.

 

I have been getting my gas from GetGo (through supermarket chain of Giant Eagle). Typically I pay less 50 % of gas price because of their FuelPerks program. I noticed that it's not listed on the top tier gas list. I've had absolutely no gas-related problems with all our vehicles. When we travel, we typically use top tier gas. I see absolutely no difference.

Not really. One of our local grocery stores here also has a rewards system. I checked the mileage over several fillups and found that I was paying more for gas using their discount than I was if I paid full price at one of the major brands. Large chain stores with associated gas stations contract with the lowest bidder and everyone in the supply chain has to turn a profit. The bigger the better. After all, stockholders want dividends. If you're paying less for fuel, it's because a corner was cut somewhere.

 

But that would be a bad business practice. If I detect even a hint of inferior quality in their gas, I would stop using it. This also means they will lose their grocery store business as well.

 

It's a number game, the same as any other business. They'll lose a small number of gas customers, and a slightly smaller number of grocery shoppers. They'll gain a larger number of shoppers that never check mileage. Those shoppers just look at the discount and congratulate themselves on how much they're saving.

 

The difference between generic gasoline and a brand name (e.g., Shell, Chevron, BP, etc) is the additive package. The additive package is key to keeping the engine clean. Does that mean if you fill up at Joe Schmos Gas your car will blow up, no. It means if you plan on keeping your vehicle for a long time and care about maintaining it and keeping the performance as close to new and possible, then use a brand name gas. I would also recommend you change vendors once in a while. What make Shell gas different than Chevron, for example, is the additive package. All gas in the US is fungible. That means once a refinery makes the regular or premium gasoline it goes into a pipeline with all the other manufacturer's gasoline. Only when it gets to a distribution terminal and gets picked up by a truck do the additives get added and then become Shell or Chevron, or what have you. Oh, and did you know there is no such thing as midgrade gasoline? It is literally a combination of Regular and Premium most often mixed right at the pump.

I have used Sunoco for the last 25 years in my truck, car, motorcycles, snowmobiles, lawn equipment, snowblower, and anything else that requires the use of fossil fuels and have never had an issue with fuel quality! Why Sunoco, cause its the nearest to my home. I do add Stabil ( marine grade ) to all fuel for my small engines cause it may sit for a while before I use it! But other than that, I just fill it and go. I didnt see Sunoco on the list of Top Tier fuels, but unless something changes I have no plans on goin someplace else for my fuel needs!

 

BP has the largest refinery in the USA.. why do you think the government didn't do anything(hardly) to them for the horizon platform screw up and gulf mess.

 

They are detergents, they help clean and protect engine parts from wear and tear and from build up.

 

Shell is considered the highest quality fuel, by independent ranking organizations. You also pay a premium for that, but if you stick to the top 5; Shell, Chevron/Texaco, BP, Total (not found too much in the States) or Exxon/Mobil, you really can't go wrong.

 

Actually, Port Arthur Refinery in Port Arthur, TX is the largest in the US. It was a joint venture between Shell and Saudi Aramco (known as Motiva), but it is now wholly owned and operated by Motiva.

 

You won't go wrong with any of those. Just switch them up once in a while.

I forgot about motiva buying the plant out years ago.. I use to pull of motiva back in the day..

Motiva is gone here at the farm now it's Magellan now for years..

 

There hasn't been gas since you could roll into a Gulf station & fill up with leaded 102 octane, ahhh the good ol' days...

 

That pretty fire orange color & a fragrance that made you glad you started huffing it....

Yep, huge exceptions for big corps. w/catastrophic events....
