Rough Ride

Have a Tundra with the TRD package & Bilstein shocks. Don't like the ride quality, way too stiff. Any suggestions on replacement shocks to make the ride smoother? Don't care what the cost is as long as it's quality and will last a long time. Sick of getting knocked around and sliding around in my seat every time I hit a bump..

 

Got any pics of the suspension we can take a look at? Are they blue and yellow?

 

They're Bilstein, I pulled the label off one of them. I updated the post to explain it a little better hopefully

 

A lot of this depends on your expectations. Is this your 1st truck? Any truck with appreciable tow capacity is going to ride stiffer than a car or even most SUVs.

2nd thing to look at would be what specific suspension parts you have installed. Bilstein makes a wide range of shocks, some of which will make the ride stiffer than others. If you can get temporary access to a stock Tundra, I'd suggest riding in that first. That way you have a point of reference from which to draw a conclusion.

 

It's a truck, most likely it'll ride like a truck.

Check tire pressure.

 

I expect it to ride like a truck. Not like a brick with no tires.

 

If anyone wants the Bilstein shocks when I take them off you can have them. They're pretty much new. Otherwise they're going in the garbage.

 

Speaking of tires, 20" wheel/tires will ride rougher than 17 or 18" tires. Ditto for over-inflated tires. Something else to check...

 

Our trucks are pretty rough on concrete highways.

 

tire pressure and wheel size will affect ride quite a bit if not more than suspension.....maybe get the shop to check all frame mounts, see if any are going prematurely bad. other than that, get some OEM black shocks and P rated tires.

 

Thanks, I've just never had a car bounce around like this even on small bumps. Every truck/SUV we've had has been substantially smoother. New tires probably wouldn't hurt.

 

tundra also has a bad bed bounce issue. could try loading up a couple of sandbags in the back and see if that makes any difference. It never went away for me until I got some rear resi's and i'm betting Icon leaf pack in the back will make a significant difference. could be wrong though.

 

I have had 4 Tundras, 4 Tacomas, Chevy 1500, Ford F-150's, Dodge 1500, Dodge 2500, Ram 3500, and many others not worth mentioning. I can tell you that you're not going to find a truck that rides a nice as the Escalade without serious modifications. I do have the TRD Pro with the remote reservoir shocks that rides very nice in comparison to my Ram 3500 and my 2016 Tacoma. Saying that, even with remote reservoir Bilsteins it's not going to ride as well as the caddy. I've been told Mercedes is working on releasing a 1/2ton truck this Fall.

 

Two completely different beast. The Tundra has a solid rear axle and I'll bet the Cadillac had independent rear suspension with struts/airbags... I too would rather have the Tundra and it won't leave you stranded.

 

The tundra pro suspension is the smoothest ride I've ever experienced in a truck. I've owned 17 or more of my own and driven company work trucks for about 30 years. The cost is high but from what you're saying, it might be an option for you. See if a dealer or someone that owns a TRD Pro can let you drive one and see what you think.

 

I have a 2006 dbl cab 4x4. I put the Bilstein 5100 on to the 3rd clip. The truck is level, however, the ride is very stiff compared to what it was with 1.5 inch risers and the 4600 's. Thinking if lowering it one notch to try to get the original smooth ride back. They did come with two extra washers that don't seem to fit on anything.
