Question for the guys who have Line-X in their Tundras. Wife just surprised me with getting it done in my 2018 Tundra. The place that did the install put plastic washers under the 8 bolts in the tailgate. Is that something that’s normal? I ask because when they tightened the screws up they cracked several of the washers. I want to know if this is a normal practice of using those on the tailgate since I’m going to call them shortly.

    Thanks

I think I remember mine came with plastic washers from the factory. Might just need new ones or get rid of them altogether.

Can any of you guys with a 2018 without Line-X look and see if these plastic washers are factory installed?

The plastic washers are from the factory. My bed liner was installed at the Port, but they put the washer back without breaking the washer. I have seen some places just spray the bed liner over the screws, which is a shoddy job, so at least your place took the time to remove it. Too bad that they over tightened them. Line-X guys are usually good (they have a reputation to keep) so they should make it right. If not it should not be a big deal replacing them yourself.

The place that did mine was a franchise I guess you would call it of Line-X. I’m hoping that since this is the case that I don’t have any issues. Going to call them and talk to them and see what they have to say.

Seems like shoddy work. Mine are in good shape following spray in install.

I hope it goes well. Every now and then you unfortunately get people who do not stand behind their work and will fight you for it. I had that with my son last week - he took his car in to get a flat tire fixed - they broke the pressure sensor and wanted him to pay for a new one. They thought they could take advantage of a student who don't know anything. Fortunately he called me and I talked to them. After a long heated discussion they admitted that it was their fault and they replaced it for free. Too bad it had to get to that. But, hopefully yours go smooth.

Yes, mine are like new. Anyways, what I don't understand is when people like that over tighten one screw and crack the washer, instead of making a correction on the rest, they just keep going and break them all. That's when you know they just don't care. I have screwed up many times in my life, but when I have that O shiitt moment, I don't keep doing the same thing.

Because they’re too lazy and use an impact screw gun instead of carefully hitting them by hand.

Just spoke with the owner of the shop. She says I need to bring the truck to them and let her see the issues. She also mentioned in conversation that when it leaves their property they’re not technically responsible. I told her if whoever did it either watched or checked their work that they should have found the issue and not me as a customer finding it. In the end she said she would make it right. Also she said if I found any further issues that I needed to bring the truck to let her see it today. I’m sorry but I hate dealing with people that won’t take accountability for their actions or employees.

My 2015 came with factory plastic bedliner and has the same washers. Not sure if that was installed at the factory or dealership but either way, when I went to remove them, I found around half of them were cracked.

I dont consider it shoddy. I guess it is more what you ask for. I asked them to cover the bed bolts in LINEX but i wanted to be able to remove if ever needed. So they sprayed the bed and then cut the seal under the bolt so that they could be removed but would never be seen.

Not sure what you’re meaning about what you ask for. As I stated my wife surprised me with it. I don’t feel like I need to be a “babysitter” over something like this. What makes me upset about the situation is that I wasn’t told about it and then found it. After calling back I was pretty much told that once the truck left the property they weren’t responsible. Anyone can call it what they want but that’s just not right. I do call it shoddy when you break more than one, don’t tell the customer, and obviously don’t check your work...period.

Just for anti-friction so that the screw doesn’t dig into the paint.

You are not being unreasonable here. I would have found the shop owner's response unacceptable as well. This type of response is surprising, especially from a small shop, considering the power of what a few negative ratings on local social media can do to a reputation.

Ok well if you consider it shoddy then so be it. I was merely saying in my experience from dealing with people sometimes expectations are best talked about and what is involved. I get that it was a surprise and you were not afforded the opportunity. I do however think that the inability on their part to fix something like that is the issue.

You know what makes it even worse is that they also messed up the screw heads on the screws that hold the track system in the bed on. After calling back again and questioning they admitted that some of the screw heads got messed up. My thing is...why wouldn’t this be relayed to the customer first and foremost?

Stripping the screws is one thing, but I don't think the cracked washers are a big deal. I noticed two screws weren't in all the way after getting my Line X done through the dealership. I cracked one of the two washers screwing them back in. It's pretty easy to do. No biggie.

    Agreed.

Reference the tailgate, as long as they didn't over torque them and bend metal.

I don't know if you can find the proper torque specs but you can check them with a torque wrench and see about what they tightened them down at. Start low and see what setting you need to go to to turn them.

I think they are only there to protect the paint, which is no longer an issue because of the Line-X so it's a moot point if that's the case.

This. Sounds like the later Tundras are having the (metal) beds cracking too. Hope the spray liner can add some strength.
