Coming from Chevy country, having a hard time letting go of my locking rear differential. Anyone else having trouble dealing with this Tundra shortcoming?

Yep. Many do, and you can do a limited slip or ARB.

Having lockers in Taco's I was thinking the same thing. I've wheel my truck on parts of red trails and never needed a locker. Only place it would have came in handy was off camber in the rear when I was in 2wd just spinning. Switch to 4hi and I was fine.

Towards the end of this video shows what I'm talking about.

It really comes down to what you want to do. If you are going to go off-road then you really want an air locker. But for the majority of us the limited slip diff will work just fine. I believe it's the pro series from Auburn with the heavier springs that's sold for the Tundra. I've had a 2wd Chevy with a Detroit locker in it and it amazed me how great it worked until one day I found myself sideways on a road because both rear wheels broke free. Not sure if a limited slip would of done the same thing. I wasn't hard on the throttle, just a slight incline. I also had a 94 Camaro with a stock limited slip (don't know who made it) but when putting one wheel in snow/ ice and the other on dry pavement it barely was able to move. For general use I think the Pro series limited slip from Auburn would work fine.

I live on a hill with a paved driveway and I just know in the past in Chevy I could drive up my hill in 6 inches of wet snow(sometimes one rear wheel would have to drop in the ditch) but it always made it, I’m afraid Lsd won’t cut it, anybody tried the Auburn lsd?

The A-TRAC system is pretty great if you let it do it's thing. Had it on icy roads a few times last year. Also let it get me out of a pretty bad situation on some super slick clay.

I had a factory E-locker in my 3rd gen 4runner and I had a factory LSD in my F250. I don't think the Tundra is missing anything.

Any of you guys use 4lo in the video? Or 4hi was completely sufficient?

Wait until you confirm there’s a problem. The Toyota system works really well. I agree a locker is best and wish it was available from Toyota as an option and it certainly should be standard on the Pro.
Regardless, the truck is very capable.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

I've had a to Tundra for 10 years and at no point have I wished I had a locker over the ATRAC system. That system works surprisingly well.

You won't need a locker to get up a snow covered driveway. ATRAC will be more than sufficient .

This is pretty much true for anything I have attempted. The truck just figures it out and makes its way up anything that is in front of it. I’ve been quite surprised! I’m sure there is a need in certain situations but so far I haven’t found it. The beautiful part is if you get one, you don’t have to turn it on, you can let the truck do it’s thing and you have the locker for back up.

I'd like to have the ARB but will go with the Auburn. I loath the ATRAC. Off road I find it quite useless. Off road in the snow......totally useless. I turn it off. It's OK for the pavement or dirt. There is a reason no other truck manufacturer uses something similar to ATRAC with at least a LSD/locker incorporated into the system.

I have mostly used 4hi. I have used 4Low many times but it was probably unnecessary. I just want to use it because it’s bad ass and I wanted to creep up some stuff. I have drug my bumper a few times and got lucky it didn’t mess anything up. So I’m a little wary. Sliders and tires are next for me but that won’t help the bumper. I’m not too concerned with ruining the bumper as much as I just don’t want it to end up into the body.

    The mod list never ends!

Add skids to the list. My stock skid lasted maybe 2 or 3 trips before being torn up. Don't worry too much about the bumpers on the 3rd gen. They are crappy and it give you the option to upgrade once you tear them up LOL

No, the ARB is an open differential that has an air activated device in it that locks both wheels together. With it both wheels have to spin (at the same speed). It's the best option of you are into serious off road driving as when you hit the pavement you can turn it off. If you're looking for some way to stop one tire from spinning when leaving a stop sign if you step on the gas a little too hard then you would want the Auburn. One option would be to put the Auburn in the read and the ARB in the front. A compromise to get better traction for normal driving yet get good traction off road.

Quite familiar with the ARB. Ideal but pricey. The Eaton locker that GM uses in their trucks would be my preference but Eaton doesn't make it for the Tundra. Disengages above 20 mph or so on pavement. The Auburn Gear LSD would be a very good economical upgrade to our trucks current setup.

The ARBs are great. The best, but GMs Eaton locker has proven itself to be quite worthy with their trucks for years. A long time.
