You need to add another option to the poll and just call it ‘stupid/afraid to count’

Counting everything we’ve put on and taken off (sold, so there’s some recovery there), we could’ve just bought two new Tundras in 2014 instead of the one. But I’m gonna say this one is twice as fun as stock, so that balances out. :censored:

What’s on the truck currently is a little over $30k-ish. That’s retail - some of our stuff was not paid for or was discounted appreciably.

I know @papasmurf has built an awesome truck for relatively little coin by doin all the hard work himself. @osidepunker @roypark @n2deep @jc153 @Spolar @zackbremer @dragos28 i forget Jimmy’s handle, but they’ve all built nice rigs.

It's just a crime that everything is so expensive. With just new front and rear bumpers, custom length King shocks and Icon Billet UCA's and 4.88 gears and your pretty much at the 10K level. For me I plan on having this truck till the end so I'm going to enjoy the hell out of it and do what I like cost be damned.

Not a grip of money... I've just stupidly spent it on my truck instead of "important" things.

Let's just say at this point when I talk about stuff I need to do for my truck or what I've already spent on it, my wife just shakes her head in shame and disappointment.

    Too many to list
I bought my SR5 in jan 2017 for $12k (2014 CM w 20k miles) from insurance auction. Everything up to the radiator support was hit in the front, driver side wheels were shot. Some airbags were deployed but not all.

No body damage except the driver side fender which i replaced and repainted. I wanted to change the girlle, headlights, bumper so it worked out for me perfectly. I have done tons of mods w a looong list. Its faster than a Raptor and has luxuries of German sedan. I will one day post my build. My total cost is about 45k including 12k for the truck. I got an offer for 50k last month but didnt sell.

This became my overlanding rig after all the mods. My goal is to take it all over the world. Lets see if that happens.

It adds up in a hurry and my truck is a mild build. I think I’m just north of 15k. Shit I even sold my first Tundra because it was 2wd. Does that count as a mod?
Oh yeah and my wife has no idea how much I’ve spent on my perfectly good truck and I plan to keep it that way.

I used to keep a spreadsheet for every part and accessory that I would add to my Accords. Now with the Tundra, I've tried to sit down and organize a list, but it would take the better part of a day, and wouldn't be accurate since I have a lot of extra parts sitting in storage, do those count toward a total?

can i count the cost of the first truck on my build? lol... fml...
i dont have as much as many of the others who have done full blown LT and used very expensive race shops to build their setups...
I've tried to do most my build on a budget, buying used components but eventually those all got replaced with new equipment that did cost full retail.
most expensive would be the coilovers, triple bypasses up front and in rear... UCA, Bypass hoops, rear leafs and shackles, 4 35" BFGs and another 5 more new ones sitting in my shop...
the RTT was expensive as hell, at $2200 but it really is a game changer.. i did get lucky and swooped up a used fridge from a yardsale for $100. and it works just like new. lol

the rest is all small stuff but it adds up, Kenwood ham radio, Spod touch screen system, ARB twin air, on board water, 5000w inverter, i wont count the coffee maker and microwave since those arent on the truck full time, lol but are part of my glamping equipment.

i think the biggest cost we incur is that we try to build what we can on a budget or just from an idea we have in our brain... and after field testing it we find that our needs are not met by the system, for example the hot water system.. and we remove the first setup and build a new one, and so on and so on.. for most of our components, including suspension and everything else. lol

i think the most joy is from the building and creating parts of our rigs and when we get it right we enjoy the hell out of it out in open.

damn i wrote a lot.. think i had too much coffee...

tldr, i bought shit and then more shit.

I am close to $10k, with todays purchase of some sliders i may be over $10k now. Have to change my vote now after adding the big items up in my head

Going to the Offroad Expo today, so by the end of the day I'll have broken that $2k threshold.

Actually, I think I've spent around $1500 on lights alone... Freaking Baja Designs and their awesome stuff.

So I kinda have a question for you guys on how you add shit because I’ve had this argument with some buddies in the past. If I spent 1000 on a diff out of my old truck, the rolled said truck, and put the same diff in the new truck, do I count that as cost towards the “cost to build” of the current truck?

If you spent money on the parts and put them on your new truck it still has value. If someone gives you something for free to put on your truck. Isn’t it still worth something even though it was free?

I would add value to the truck, but I I got a part for free I wouldn’t say I spent x amount on it.

I say you count it. You did purchase the parts correct? They just went on a different truck first but the mod money was still spent. The parts are on your current vehicle right?

I’d like to see your truck. Our goal is to drive as far as we can in the Western Hemisphere. The farthest points north, south, east and west.

By the time we finish that, we may need a new rig for the intercontinental stuff.

Well thanks a lot OP. This is not something that has crossed my mind yet. Bought the truck less than a year ago and I glanced at this, thought for a second and selected the 5-10k. Done.

Then I went and started adding it up. 13.7k and climbing. Oh well, I was close on the guess and at least it'll be paid off next month. I bought this truck and told my friends I was leaving it stock, looking back their laughter was valid. It's easily justified when I look back at previous toys, road race subi, class 10, class 12.

I will be really interested in something like this. Its like expedition Overland episodes on you tube you probably have seen. I got contacts in Eastern Hemisphere as well of it ever comes down to that.

I m almost done w most of my mods. Just have to do a few 600-800 miles test runs to see everything is good. Last mod will be LRA tank. Already got the world map that needs to be installed on the headliner so I can mark the location covered on there. I will probably post a thread once i m 90% done w the mods as the remaining 10% never ends. Are you guy planning for something soon or in a few years...
