I have a 2011 Tundra Rock Warrior with7" lift on 35s. My question is, should I be running tow haul on with the bigger tires? And if I do will it save on the transmission on daily driving?

    Welcome from CO!!!

The TH function will hold gears longer, so this will work in your situation so the transmission isn't always hunting for gears.

The best thing is to really consider re-gearing.

What gears would be good to go with? Maybe 4.56?

Its wierd that you would say that. At a low speed its only 1 to 2 mph off on the speedo. I wonder if it has been regeared already.

Regearing has nothing to do with the speedo.

Other than your butt dyno or asking the PO, not sure there’s a way to tell. Does your truck hunt for gears on the highway going uphill? The speedo won’t tell you because that just measures how fast your wheels are spinning. Putting on 35’s will increase rolling diameter by about 8%. So when you’re driving 50mph, your speedo will be off by 4mph. 2mph when you’re going 25. Regearing won’t change that.

It does not hunt for a gear going up hills at all.

Lift rear of truck, place rear axle on jack stands. Since we have an open differential, you may need to place one of the rear tires on the ground.

Mark tire off ground, mark the driveshaft.
Put truck in neutral, and spin the marked tire one full revolution.

Did the driveshaft spin 4.3, 4.5, or 4.8 times around?

Normally you would just count the ring/pinion teeth after removing the differential cover, but we have 3rd member designs, and that is a lot more involved.

I doubt someone re-geared the truck.

Honestly, it might not be obvious unless you’re towing or going up fairly steep at a pretty high speed. It is possible the PO regeared. But I would say more unlikely than likely. Most people who go to 37’s regear and most who go to 35’s don’t.

Generally as a whole, Tundra owners IQ are much higher than most. However, just use common sense when doing this procedure. I know someone that damn near killed himself attempting this very procedure.

@ColoradoTJ since we're on the topic of regearing, at what point should we start to consider a regear? i'm assuming tire size and added weight both tie into the equation?
All I've done (so far) is went to 32.5" tire, would a regear be something i should be looking at? thinking about adding full skid plates, sliders, and bumpers in the future- maybe then it might be needed?:notsure:

The Fresh Mouse what I have read in other threads is going past 35" tires you might want to regear.

that's what i thought but wouldn't 32" tires and any of the mentioned added weight also require the same?

I test drove a lot of tundra's before i bot this one. They were all stock. The only thing that was different was the turning radius. Other than that, no change in power.

Keith @dirtydeeds has been re-gearing to 4.88 gears to gain fuel economy.

Give him a call. Great vendor to work with and is happy to offer any information your looking for.
