My question is this, use cruise while towing on the open interstate or no? If not why? About to take my 2012 on a road trip pulling my 20ft enclosed trailer.

No, because all the other threads on here about this generally say not to and I might as well follow the crowds.

I’d say if you got it in the right gear and there’s not too bad of a headwind as well as the road is fairly flat, go for it. Learn to anticipate what your truck is going to do and try to be in the proper gear and turn off cruise when needed. You don’t want the truck hunting for gears constantly. That builds heat and kills the life of your transmission fluid and clutches. But I have found that I get better gas mileage with my foot then with cruise. Let my truck slow down a little going up the hills and speed up a little going downhill. Cruise control is constantly adjusting the pedal to keep you at that exact speed. Instead of kind of going with the flow if you know what I mean.

I have always been taught not to use cruise when towing. I was just making sure what I was taught was correct. :)

Next question: What about putting it in manual mode if going through some hilly area so it doesn't hunt constantly? This I have seen some people do but only on older vehicles that didn't have the true manual mode, just 2 and Low.

That’s basically what I was telling you to do. I never tow with cruise on. But I was saying you probably could if the circumstances were safe. Personally I like to leave it off because it helps keep me alert. Also I was saying that you should put it in manual mode so that you can control the gears and limit when you use overdrive.

Sorry, I missed that post. Makes perfect sense. 1200 mile trip coming up in less than 48 hours! I'm trying to get everything together and a million things running through my mind!

    No cruise.
    Manual shift mode.
5th most of the time of level ground.
4th if slower or mild hills.
    Steeper passes, 4th or 3rd.

Yeah sorry. I made you read between the lines. Good luck and be safe on your trip!
I prefer tow haul and in manual mode. Then up shift to a gear as needed. When the truck downsifts on a grade I move manually the selector to that gear so it holds it until I feel it needs the higher gear again.

Many here just use D and tow haul and claim good results as well. Pick your poison, you should be ok. Don’t beat the piss out of it and stay at the trucks with trailers speed limit.
