So two different tundra dealerships have told me different things. One says to change the oil every 5K another says to change the oil every 10 K. The care package that I purchased I believe it was every 10 K. That is at least what I have been doing. My truck has close to 80,000 miles now so I’m wondering if I should start changing it every 5K. Since I will start changing it myself.. I don’t know anything about this synthetic oil .. I would appreciate some info...

For some reason the flex fuel tundra's require 5,000 mile oil changes.the only difference I think is the fuel system because of the E85 fuel?mine is flex fuel 5.7 v8 .mine took 8 quarts to change the oil.

Going 10k without oil change is crazy. Even with synthetic. If you drive purely highway miles your engine can squeeze out 10k.

If you tow or you drive city style driving then this is considered ‘heavy service’ and reduces your change intervals in half. Most I’d go is 5k without changing under normal highwy drives. Or, 3-4k when towing/city mucho.

Look at your gas cap. If your vehicle is non flex fuel there will be a slash across E85....921DC4BD-62BF-4B06-8AB9-38CD7E972A39.jpg

Well not cool. Mine is a flex fuel. And it already has 72,000 miles. And I only change the oil every 10 K. Hopefully that’s not a problem.

I’m wondering why it wasn’t in my Toyota care package that I paid for. The maintenance package. I guess you just can’t trust dealerships.

If you only run reg grade gas . Will that make a difference in the oil lasting longer ?

I don’t know. I have had this conversation with my brother who is the most detailed and anal F-16 mechanic I have ever known. His view is 10,000 is nothing with good synthetic and he does just that with his 2016 Runner Pro.
I go 5,000 because I’m hard headed and old school. But, I HIGHLY doubt all of these manufacturers would put their reputation on the line by extending oil changes. In fact, I bet if I were to go 10,000 and send my oil in to test it would be perfectly fine.

To the OP. They have the FFV at 5,000 because running e85 will dirty the oil much faster and since they do not know if someone is or is not running it they keep that schedule. If you don’t run any e85 your engine is perfectly fine with the interval you were changing. Carry on as usual.

Yea bro. That literally is why the interval is different. If your not running corn through the tank you’re good. The only way you would have had an issue is if you had problems during warranty and they looked at that. But, the idiot dealer didn’t even know so it would have fallen on them. Don’t worry about it. You have done no damage to your engine.

If you’re running 87 (required per Toyota) or better you are perfectly fine.

I hear you. From my studies: It depends on the type of driving one does. The three things that reduce intervals are: City (short) driving which doesn’t allow moisture burnoff, towing (heat strain) and driving during extended outdoor temps over 90°(All Heavy Service).

These claims of 10k miles may be true, but what were the conditions, style, temps, etc. during testing? Probably perfect which isn’t the norm for most.

Also, I’d at the minimum do an oil filter change (at 5k) if taking the oil to 10k. Oil changes are cheap insurance.

I have a 2018 5.7 flex fuel and my dealership recommended every 5k. This was part of the toyocare or whatever it was called.

I split the difference and do oil changes at 7,000-7,500 miles. Always use pure synthetic oil and a toyota filter.

5.7 Non flex. I'm on the 10k/12 month schedule. Normally oil expires before mileage so it's 8800-9200* per year. Mixed city and highway. No problems whatsoever. Oil Blackstoned once. Use same oil, same driving habits, hell.. Even the same gas station (Costco).

My is a 5.7L flex model I was told if I run e85 flex fuel in my then I need to change it every 5000 miles, if I don’t use e85 then I can push it 10000 miles. But I feel better doing it at 5000 miles. Then if I go past a little it will not hurt it.

Silly question you said old school at 5000 miles, I thought old school was 3000 miles (or am I just older school)

Really makes you wonder about e85 when they suggest changing your oil at half the ‘normal’ interval. Here is a link to a service shop I found on the internet thats many states away from my home. I really like their philosopy. Pretty straight forward advice and no nonsense maintenance tips. Reminds me of my local shop.

Here is their link to ‘extended oil changes’.

I know that there are few, if any, who will agree with my one year oil and filter changes, but it's what I've done for 40 years, with vehicles that I've driven 300K miles without issue, vehicles that I still have, that still run like new. that still show no wear after 28 years (I've opened up this engine, top and bottom, 28 years old, 300K+ miles. No sludge, clean and no perceivable wear). Sometimes those year-long intervals add up to 10K miles, sometimes closer to 20K. But I wouldn't do it with just any synthetic. It hasn't always been the case, but I live 20 highway miles from the closest little town. No short trips anymore. I'm 16K into the last change on my Tundra @ 94K total miles.
