DIY: Rear Differential Breather Mod

    Tools needed:
    • 14mm wrench
    • Torx bit - T30
    • Dykes (diagonal cutting plyers)
    • Philips screwdriver
    • Drill

    Required parts:
    Optional parts:
    • New breather Part # 90930-03136

    Instructions
    1. Drop down and remove the spare tire.
    2. Remove the stock breather with 14mm wrench.
    3. Install union.
    4. Push new hose onto the union.
    5. Add hose clamp at union.
    6. Run the hose up to the bed following the brake lines.
    7. Zip tie the hose to the brake lines and frame as desired. Remember to leave enough extra for when the suspension droops down.
    8. Route the hose to desired location for the breather. Some has placed them in the gas cap compartment or bed. If needed you will have to drill a hole to feed the hose into these locations.
    9. Install breather and hose clamp in desired location. Secure as needed.

    So here is a quick little write up for the diff breather mod.
    -Diff is hot, when you cross cool water it will vacuum that mud/water into your diff=costly repair. great $20 insurance plan.-

    I used 5/16 fuel line 12ft ish depending on how you decide to route.
    2 hose clamps
    teflon tape
    bunch of zip ties
    Cutters,pliers, star socket for the tails(forgot what size)

    $8 90404-51319 Toyota Genuine Parts - Union (90404-51319)

    First remove your tail light/disconnect all the plugs and put aside(2 star screws+pins that you need to pull away from to remove). Look down inside and see where you would route the line. Look towards the top of the bed and see where you would like to mount the new breather on. Make sure breather is pointed upward(highest point possible.)

    New adapter mounted(teflon tape the threads)

    fuel line connected to new adapter,clamp and be sure to leave a good amount of slack for Flex.

    I ran the line above the frame zip tied green so I can easily distinguish the breather line. then went along the frame up into the taillight section.

    Then mount the new breather in clamp it ,clip all the excess fuel line, zip ties, and put everything back together.
    Really easy mod. I seen countless threads where ppl run clear fuel filter through. you can if you want to. I honestly don't see the point unless you want to see if you would get any "blow back"?
    But I opted to this simple.. just like our front breathers.

    here is a video of my taco running through a small river. I didn't have the diff breather on at the time on the taco, drained the fluid. and luckily no water mixed in.. but now breather is in the taco and tundra for peace of mind just in case situations like this occurs again.

    I am reusing the existing one. It fits in the hose just fine.

    The ARB is just a fancy version of the diff mod discussed here which is quite good by the way. And mod is cheaper in cost. There really isn't a great advantage when used on our Tundra since Toyota positioned the transfer case breather and front diff breather high up. Not sure why Toyota dropped the ball on the rear diff. The ARB actually allows up to 4 breathers if you need them which we don't.
