Bypass valve noise?

Anyone have a video of the noise that the bypass valves make in the ADS rear shocks by chance? That kind of stuff usually drives me batshit crazy so I'm trying to find an example of it, but am coming up dry.

 

It's noisy at slower speeds when the window is down. I don't notice 'em when the window is up. I read that you can have 'em built with Viton seals to keep the noise down?

 

I drive with the windows down in town a LOT so that's probably going to drive me nuts. I don't know about the seals but I'll ask Matthew about it.

 

Viton seals are just hi temp seals compared to the standard BUNA. Doing those won't change anything. The noise comes from the tappet valve just opening and closing. The actual tap sound is the tappet closing back against the bypass tube which is metal on metal. You can help prevent the tapping sound around town by stiffening the tubes but then it is going to hurt the ride quality.

 

Bummer! Are there any shock manufacturers that have solved this issue?

 

King's Prerunner series and vehicle specific applications utilize a delrin tappet that reduces noise but I wouldn't say that it eliminates it.

Not for me. My OCD kicks in big time so clickity-clack noises eventually make me want to sell my vehicle. I've been known to tear down a dash to find an inconsistent rattle and stop it. A rattling in the dash was actually one of the reasons I traded in my Altima early and bought this truck lol. Didn't want to take another one apart.

 

Gotcha. My experience of one truck with rear bypasses is as follows. Even with radio off and slider open I don't hear them around town. Maybe our streets are too smooth but I never hear them clicking. Off-road with the slider closed (due to dust) I don't hear them. Hopefully you can find someone and take a ride around town and see if it's loud enough you notice it. Good luck!

 

Also my shocks are through the bed on a cage so the tubes are pretty close to the window and I don't hear it a ton. Again, my sampling of one truck.

 

Turn up the tunes or get a louder exhaust, problem solved.

 

That's why I'm trying to find a video of it. I don't know of anyone here in the OKC area that has them. If it's super light then it'll likely be drowned out by the radio. It's just something I have to hear first.

 

TRD cat-back is on the list, but it'll be well after the lift. Between that and the OEM Audio Plus upgrade that's also on the list... maybe?

 

do you need them ? if not then problem solved just get some nice rear shocks with reservoirs. You cannot expect silence from an off road setup honestly. Once you start upgrading, the leaf pack will also start making noise too and that will drive you crazy. my 0.02

 

That's what Matthew over at MCM recommended after I told him what I was wanting to do w/the truck.

 

At least it’s a noise with a purpose. Not just some loose rattle somewhere. The noise just means the shocks are doing their job. If the noise stops, now you have a real problem. I understand OCD can be a bitch, as I have it as well. But sometimes you have to trick your OCD by wanting to hear the noise LOL.

 

If you drive nothing but under 20mph with your windows down 24/7 then I wouldn't worry about the noise. It's a very minimal click sound.
